I have it from a number of sources that John Tamahere is considering standing in the Tamaki Makaurau seat either as a Independent or as the Maori Party candidate.
Readers will recall he previously held that seat as a Labour Party member.   You would have to rate his chances … Tamahere can call in a lot of credits from his role as CEO of the Waipareira Trust.

He, along with Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, CEO of the Taranaki Ngati Ruanui Iwi and the confirmed Maori Party candidate for the Te Hauauru seat formally held by Dame Tairana Turea, will seriously challenge the two Labour Party incumbents.     Labour’s majority in Tamaki Makaurau is 3,809 while in Te Haurauru its just 1,039.

Labour’s Maori caucus in recognising their two incumbents are vulnerable will ensure they are afforded safe List placings.   This will allow both Tamihere and Ngarewa-Packer to campaign on the basis of buy one, get one free.   That could be a powerful incentive for Maoridom to vote tactically.
