There is much in the Greens just announced (increases to) Tax policy to criticise but for now I’ll focus on just one of their brain farts … the imposition of a wealth tax of 1% on those with a net wealth of over one million dollars and 2% for those with two million dollars plus … ignoring the fact that many in that category will have their assets tied up in Trusts and escape it anyway.

But here’ the real kicker … it would only apply to assets owned outright meaning that anyone could skip it by mortgaging their home for $1.    Dumb Greens, just dumb.

But tax the rich pricks has a good ring to it and will appeal to those to subscribe to the politics of envy.

  1. Here's what Labour should do:- deny that you have any plans fof taxes like these, producing a tax plan of mere tweaks.- Form a coalition government with the Greens, including all these taxes.- Put the welfare plans into place immediately and bump up other government spending as well.- Lose the 2023 election by a landslide.- Watch National manage the new normal \”better\” with no cut in government spending even close to the increases, while trying to shave the new taxes a little and maintain political capital for a rainy day.- re-take power in 2029 0r 2032 as voters forget 2021. Take control again of all the institutions built earlier and lovingly maintained by National. They might even have squeezed out another round of surpluses by then as well so they'll be room for increased spending.Sure, it means being out of power for three terms of office but what will that matter when your ideas own the future.

  3. The greens have painted themselves into a corner. If they were just an environmental party they could attract devotees across the blue red spectrum. As it is they are locked into the position left of Labour with only the option of going with Labour. I can’t match Tom’s convoluted senarious and I doubt that any politician things that far ahead, but my prediction is that these greens disappear to be replaced by a true environmental party. Ian

  4. I'm being a little cynical with my scenarios, but I also cannot see us avoiding tax increases across the board over the next few years and a futher expansion of the state – and that's without any politiciann thinking that far ahead. All the systems and environment is now in place to enable that to happen naturally. It would actually take a politician thinking years ahead to stop it now, and I can't see anyone or anything on the horizon capable of that, including ACT.
