No Minister

The media is reporting that the incident where a young female police officer was ‘allegedly’ shot at (ffs … the implication being she possibly made the story up) happened not too far away from where I’m writing this.

I suspect I know the female officer involved. It is a salutatory reminder that criminals are ever more likely to present and use firearms when confronted by police.

But it’s also a graphic reminder that the Arms Act (as amended in 2019) was and remains woke nonsense. Thousands of firearms confiscated from law abiding citizens leaving gangs and other assorted criminal elements cocking their collective snoots.

New Zealand, the way you’ve got it.

  2. Noel … you got it. But that was not the point of my post. The Arms Act (as amended) actively discriminates against law abiding citizens while it’s business as usual for societies criminal elements evidenced by what happened this morning.

  3. So the media clearly identified the policewoman was shot at but the search is on for the “alleged offenders”.
    Not quite

    • Gerald, you’d better go and study the English language.

  4. Gerald … you are indulging in semantics rather than responding to the substance of the post. And to reiterate what I said in my previous post … National is equally to blame for agreeing to support this stupid piece of legislation … act in haste and regret at leisure. It did not/has not made NZL a safer place.

  5. So, if I understand this correctly, the incomprehensible decision to not bother registering firearms made by previous governments had the predictable effect that we now don’t know how many firearms of what types are in the country or who has them, but that very predictable effect is now the Ardern government’s fault because the 2019 Arms Act didn’t magically make those effects of previous policy built up over decades simply disappear?

This shit is just beyond me. I have a pretty high regard for Ardern and her 2017- 20 government, but you guys seem to expect it to have worked miracles. She isn’t the second coming of Christ, you know. Maybe set your expectations a little lower than achieving the impossible?

    • PM you’re either not aware, or have conveniently forgotten that firearms were required to be registered. The police realised registration was impossible to achieve (illegal firearms are never registered). The 1982 act changed that so the owners not the firearms were registered.

Your favourite numpties went against best practice with really stupid legislation. The legislation is so bad it’s now on to its third iteration/correction.

  7. Milt – if you want to hold any Government responsible for the lack of a gun register you probably need to o back to the very first one. Muskets they may have been in the 1800’s but they were still guns.

Having said that a gun register would throw no light on illegal guns and that is the very point of Vet’s post that we are commenting on.
