No Minister

Tax Payers should not fund Ihumatao – Jacindas Folly

The heading is mine but the text that follows is from a press release from The Honourable Judith Collins Leader of the National Party and I support what she says 100%.

Judith says:

`The Government will open a Pandora’s Box if it spends even a single cent of taxpayer money on cleaning up the mess it made at Ihumatao, Leader of the Opposition Judith Collins says.

The Ihumatao situation is a problem of Jacinda Ardern’s own making, and taxpayers should not be bailing her out.

“It’s difficult to fathom that with more than 20,000 Kiwi families currently waiting for a home the Government is prepared to spend millions stopping 480 much-needed houses from being built.

Judith Collins

The Prime Minister needs to explain why she thinks it’s appropriate to meddle in private property rights with taxpayers’ money because she will be setting an appalling precedent. The Ihumatao deal will place a question mark over all full and final treaty settlements, and the protestors at Shelly Bay will know they’ve only got to sit tight and wait for the Government to step in.”

“Jacinda Ardern really should have got more for the $150,000 she has already burned on $325-dollar-an-hour consultants. If their answer was to throw even more taxpayer money at the problem then she should ask for her money back. The decision should have been an easy one. The Prime Minister had no right to get involved in the first place other than to tell protestors to go home, which is what she should do now.

Judith Collins

“Between the $330,000 pay-out to settle Trevor Mallard’s defamation suit and the millions more set to be spent cleaning up Jacinda Ardern’s bungling at Ihumatao, taxpayers are really digging deep at the moment to clean up Labour’s poor decisions.”

What is worse is that the government seems to be just warming up as far as handing out taxpayers money is concerned – the grievance door is going to be wide open if they pay out on Jacinda’s Ihumatao folly..

UPDATE: The protestors win and Jacindas Folly costs Taxpayer $29.9m – help yourself potestors it is now open slather!!!

UPDATE 2: David Farrar at Kiwiblog has nailed it – saying:

`We spent $30 million to prevent 480 houses being built.

We being New Zealand taxpayers – and to think about 50% of all voting New Zealanders voted for this lot. Give me a break.

  1. There seems to be a comment that houses will be built on Ihumatao – only by the still activists.
I would bet substantially that none will be started in say 5 years.
What builder in his right mind would take on such a proposition with activists doing Haka every day, and building difficulties all the time with things “going wrong”.
Fletchers must be cracking a bottle to be shot of it.

    • I agree. I do not expect that a single potato will be planted on the site. This is the ugly face of Jacinda’s stupidity and the ugly face of Maori greed.
