Bloody Dangerous Idiots – All Three

Yesterday mrspdm decreed that she and I would travel to Napier from our Hastings home because she had sighted a bargain in a store not represented in Hastings. Suffice to say we got said bargain from a store across the road she had spotted the bargain at – which did have a Hastings outlet – at a cost of $100 approx more than intended. But enough of our shopping exploits.

On our way back to Hastings along the Marine Parade (SH51) as we approached the passing lane from the Te Awa turn off (by Maraenui Golf Club) to the Awatoto Fertilser Works we came up behind three camper vans apparently travelling in convoy – splitting the campervans were a couple of private vehicles. This is where the idiocy happened and their speed as we caught them was about 85 to 90ks.

At the start of the passing lanes the front two campervans indicated and pulled into the right hand lane even though there were no vehicles ahead of them to pass. There they stayed while the two private vehicles overtook them using the left hand lane as did the third camper van.

I said to mrspdm bugger this and backed off a couple of hundred yards – it was an accident waiting to happen. I kept that gap until we turned off to visit relatives in Havelock North and they went on to Hastings.

In hindsight we should have *555’d them but were so mesmirised by the lunacy we did not think of it at the time.

    • Probably correct Noel – but it was the Camper Vans that ere the original cause.

  2. Sorry
    Dual carriageways and motorways
There are no laws in New Zealand that prevent you from passing on the left (or ‘undertaking’) on a motorway. or a dual carriageway.

    So two idiots.

    • Indeed. Many Auckland motorway drivers have a strange urge to go straight to the right hand lane on entering the motorway, despite entering at low speed. Then they sit there at 90kph until I am behind them flashing full beams and horn blaring. They seem bewildered and not understanding what all the fuss is about.

The right lane is for overtaking. If that is not your intention stay the hell out of it, you twats.

    • I think you might just find there is a law which says ‘keep left at all times.’

  4. This is typical non safe driving in New Zealand as mentioned by PDM and John. I’ve noticed the sme behaviour in Akl as I drive a lot in Akl and Wellington.

The Akl behaviour in the right lane is primarily an Asian thing about feeling safe, my Akl mate tells me.

It comes down to poor driver education at the learning level and poor enforcement.

Rather than wasting millions on speed reduction averts they could do a whole range on road behaviour and safe driving tips.

But you also get the self appointed traffic police officers who like to enforce the law by sitting in the right lane doing 100kmph on the dot..

Coming back from Tauranga to Akl last week on State Highway 2in a 4 car queue approaching the Bombay intersection and there is a 2 lane passing that is max 90kmph. Car 2 took the opportunity to pass at 120kmph, car 3 in his electric vehicle was self appointed and we crawled past car 1 at exactly 90kmph.!!!

Just short of the runout we got a sniff of a gap and floored it, passing him on the left with our hearts in our mouths.

Never has the middle finger been so rigid but so pleasurable, and shit for brains enjoyed it too!

  5. JJ and Rossco you and possibly others refer to people hogging the outside lane lane on motorways. This incident did not happen on a motorway – there are none in Hawkes Bay.

Where this incident happened was a passing lane about 2ks long on a stretch of road which for reasons I cannot understand has more than it’s share of accidents. I have been driving between Hastings and Napier for almost 60 years and this used to be the main road, without even a scare that I can recall.

    • Sure PDM I understand, I think I know the piece of road but we mainly drive Wellington to Havelock North for Horse of the Year. Dont get as far as Hastings!!

But your incident is frightening but often typical of dumb road behaviour generally.

What motivates someone to do what you were confronted with??

    • They wouldn’t last five minutes in Western Australia. The coppers would have’em.
