Following the Prime Minister’s announcement of the Governor General to succeed Dame Patsy Reddy later this year my focus was to question the capability for Kiro to fulfill the seriously serious functions involved in the office of Head of State under our unwritten constitutional process.
My misgivings were somewhat circumspect out of a lingering respect for the office of Gov Gen and dear old Wayne took me to task for referring to the current Prime Minister as a Silly Little Girl in relation to her inappropriate. reference to republicanism that just fueled my contempt for the total disregard for the Gravitas Kiros appointment might have held.
Well my concerns were given a full bottle of Oxygen this morning in a post at Slaters BFD News in a ‘guest post’.
Pretty thought provoking that someone Wayne considers deserves respect when her notions of what a Governor General might need as basic character traits are so trivialised.

I have seen Cindy Kirk enough to know she will be a good Governor General. And probably with a bit more public coverage that Dame Patsy. She has a better understanding of media and will engage better. As Sir Jerry showed, it is an important part of the role which has been somewhat missing in the last 5 years.
This Cindy Kirk you talk about was she Captain Kirk’s little sister or that granddaughter of Big Norm, you know that iconic Labour man who was around when Wayne thought that was where his future might be best served in Politics.
The dear lady who will be our next representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her heirs and successors has a proclivity well exposed now of having a rather loose and casual relationship with truth and probity, things in isolation might ring alarm bells in normal plebeians but I guess to an Honourable ex Minister of the Crown, such trifles might be entirely excusable and easily overlooked.
Since the entire function of GG is to open things, sign things, and appear at things, where do you see issues of truth and probity becoming important?
Do you think the GG can create legislation out of thin air?
Do you think the GG writes “The Speech from the Throne”? Or does the GG read whatever words the government of the day requires to be read?
Is the truth of the matter simply that you’re pissed off because the job didn’t go to a pale, stale, male? Maybe you wanted a Brash, a Slater, or dare I write it, a Gravedodger?
@ Dorrit you seem cavalier over the serious step of “Royal ascent” which actually exists as the only step between government at the will of the people and dictatorship. When the republicans get their way it will be very interesting what happens to that potentially troublesome bit of presidential power or will it just get binned. Can’t help but wonder if the shallow attitudes were so easily dismissed if it was National or Act who were being so giggly and casual over the fragile constitutional niceties being trivialised and someone such as McCully was in the frame.
By clinging to Royal Assent you are putting the primacy of an unelected foreign head of state over your elected representatives. Time to grow up, step out from behind mummy’s petticoat, and develop an independent nation.
Creation of a New Zealand Republic would provide a chance to have a written constitution and to codify the things that are important to the nation’s governance. Are you enough of an adult to contemplate that?
