Christian Porter has withdrawn his high-stakes defamation action against the ABC after the public broadcaster conceded historical rape allegations against him could not be substantiated.
The former attorney-general is believed to have received a payout from the ABC towards his substantial legal costs but the terms of the settlement have not been released.

Nowhere to be seen, of course. To a man, the Australian news media ignored the story, refusing to publish the name of the ‘senior labor figure’ accused in an affidavit of rape. Of course the police did not prosecute. This is Australia.
It’s time the ABC had it’s budget cut by ten times the amount of settlement and legal costs of defamation claims.
No Minister 
Accusations against Shorten were tested by the Police and found wanting. Shorten, like Porter, “outed” himself as the accused. But unlike Porter, Shorten did not throw his toys out of his cot, launch defamation proceedings, and then drop them when he saw the evidence was compelling.
An under the counter deal still leaves a very fishy smell against the one time former First Law Officer. If were in Porter’s shoes, and I had the wealthy backer he does, I would not have settled, I would have gone all out to prove m y case. One must surely ask why he gave in so easily.

C’mon LD … you don’t get the aggrieved party to discontinue action and pay his legal costs unless you know you’re on a hiding to nothing. What’s the difference between this and the case involving Speaker Mallard … not much except the third of a million (and climbing) Mallard has had to cough up is public monies.
If anyone was “on a hiding to nothing”, it was Porter.
He had already had one of his legal team thrown off the case.
He had attempted to get almost the entirety of the ABC defence thrown out, but that failed.
Contrary to Adolf’s claim (and that’s the problem with relying on Lord Molloch’s Media Monster) the ABC have not paid Porter’s legal costs. All they have paid is the mediation costs. Porter has declined to identify the Billionaire funding his case, but my money’s on the same source that is funding an accused war criminal.
Because he backed down, Porter is now forever tainted and will be anathema to party and electorate.
