No Minister

But for me the Tokyo games leave me cold and I doubt I’ll be spending too much time watching them. They’re being conducted in quite bizarre circumstances and they only reason they’re going ahead is that thing called MONEY … sport, the well-being of competitors … very much a secondary consideration.

And as for the Kiwi ladies footballers ‘taking the kneel’ before their game with Oz … give me feekin strength. The games are supposed to be non-political … ok, observed in the breech perhaps but not to the extent now that that every woke issue is fair game. Perhaps we can expect to see the Cuban team kneel in protest against US sanctions or, or, or even a team take the kneel in protest against protests. If the IOC were really genuine in claiming the games are solely about sport then perhaps protests would see participants being sanctioned.

Having said all that I’m a realist … the protests will continue particularly in this woke driven age … but for me its another turnoff for the games.

Interested where you sit on this.

  1. I’ve no intention of watching the olympic games either. Any Womens sports are now effectively compromised and it’s no longer about the quest to be the very best at something (apart from virtue signalling and political statements).

  2. The selection of Gavin Hubbard as a female weightlifter was pretty much the end for me.

Will try to watch Nick Willis because he is a guy who gives his best.

  3. Remember the knee bending isn’t for white stale cis males except to wind them up. We are the group least likely to be impressed by gesture politics. But all the woke will lap it up. No doubt the woman’s team will get a participation certificate.

  4. Agree wholeheartedly with youVet around the taking the knee BS, however we need to be doing more ‘normal’ stuff. It’s the only way we, the world that is, will come out of this oppressive Covid state.

I don’t think there are any olympians with co-morbidities so they will be absolutely fine, no need to worry about their welfare.

  5. Thank you PDM for reminding us about Laurel nee Gavin Hubbard. Reason #3 and growing.

  6. white stale cis males

You are railing against “gesture politics” and the “woke”, yet use a woke term to describe yourself.

Unlike you, I am a male, no CIS required. CIS belongs in Chemistry, not sociology.

  7. and they only reason they’re going ahead is that thing called MONEY

A Capitalist railing against someone making money? That’s like a Vegetarian complaining about carrots. The Games have always been about money, it’s just that since the 1980s the athletes have captured some of the gold for themselves.

    • “The Games have always been about money”… Absolute rubbish.

The Olympics have not always been about money, or even nationalism. The “modern” Olympics started in 1896 but it was Hitler’s 1936 Olympics that really started the obnoxious nationalism. But even then, there was no TV coverage so nothing in the way of money, sponsorship and so on.

  8. Personally I’ve long had contempt for the Olympics. It is all about cheating, greed and money, hence corruption.

The catalog of events has swollen into the ludicrous and ridiculous with the likes of skateboarding still to come.

Make me chairman of the IOC. The first thing I will do is axe almost all sports that require judging* and get back to citius, altius, fortius. Then I would axe all “contrived” sports. If you are going to have a swimming race of 400m then fine. No need to have freestyle, backstroke, butterfly events. One race “freestyle” will do and use whatever style you want. Walking race? Gone. Hopping backwards race? Not on my watch, but the way we are going it will become an event.

And don’t even get me started on chicks with dicks in the weightlifting.

some exemptions such as boxing and gymnastics as a) awesomeness and b) reasonably objective scoring guidelines.

  9. Sorry to rain on your parade LD but the Olympics have not always been about money … only since TV came along did the money making aspect really take off. But all that aside I think these games in particular are tainted so, come out of the closet … are you in favour of the games going ahead.

To an extent capitalism has lost its meaning (as has the word socialist). I believe in a free society where people are encouraged to stand on their own feet and be rewarded for their initiative while taking responsibility for their own actions. A society where big is not necessarily better and where the ruling hand of government is kept as light as possible. A society far removed from where the Ardern government is heading.

  10. I stopped watching the Summer Olympics after 1988 when the drug cheating became impossible to ignore. Sure, the Canadian guy got stripped of the 100m Gold, but Florence Griffith Joyner got clean away with it, although the steroids caught up with her and killed her at early age.

Paid a bit of attention to 2000 because it was Aussie, but since then….

Luckily the Winter Olympics took over for me from 1984 and were fun for a while, but the NZ coverage was hopeless compared to the first time we were enthralled by them in 1984. Now it’s infected by the same stuff as the Summer games, including not covering an event because there are no Kiwi’s in it.

With high-speed 4K cameras there are things like archery that might be cool to watch and I suppose I could track it down on the Web, but it just doesn’t seem worth it.
