Just Two Questions

No, they’re not trick questions.

1 Who was the last American general who won a war?

2 Who is the American general who is capable of winning the next war? (clue – it ain’t Milley.)

  1. Tommy Franks (except the follow up was abysmal – nevertheless he won the fighting part) or Stormin’ Norman (ditto) so before that MacArthur in Korea? Next war? Probably some USAF LTC currently at staff college.

  2. Eisenhower did a reasonable job.

The next war..easy the Commander in Chief, President Trump.

If the cuent General doesnt win, then “You’re Fired”

Can the next question be a multi choice… I like them.

  3. Well those answers are reasonable if we’re talking about actual combat – tactical battles and so forth. But the listing of MacArthur is part of a much larger point, which is that modern American generals are not allowed to win wars nowadays.

MacArthur in Korea was the first such example; as brilliant as the Inchon landings were in rapidly rolling back the North Koreans the fact was that he could not invade their country to the point of defeating them because it would bring in the Chinese – and it did. Not to mention the risk of escalating to nuclear war.

The same was arguably true of Vietnam also.

But while that’s fair enough, since Vietnam the threshold of “winning” has been constantly reduced further – while at the same time nebulous goals like “nation-building” (Iraq and Afghanistan) and “humanitarian missions” (Somalia, The Balkans) have expanded – to the point where I think the US should simply not engage in any war of choice.

Yet another of the reasons why Trump won in 2016 and why “Trumpism” is here to stay.

    • It has been written by more than a few that Gen Westmorland defeated the Viet Cong in the Tet Offensive but was himself defeated by the traitors Kerry, Fonda and Cronkite, the latter of whom used the CBS network to shout the great lie that the war was lost, thereby destroying the support of the American public.

Mind you. you would never think so from reading Wikipedia.
