WHAT IS IN A NAME?

In earliest time I knew there were seven seas that were sailed by intrepid mariners since man went to sea in boats, and then with education there were five oceans, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, Southern and the Pacific. The last named by Ferdinand Magellan when he discovered it in 1521 and named it Mar Pacifico, Peaceful Sea. I have no idea how Mar Pacifico was pronounced in Portuguese or Spanish, but for my entire time alive it has been said and heard as Pacific. /pe’sifik/.

Evidently hundreds of years later there has been a massive dollop of incorrect pronouncement, all along it was supposed to be Paarsifik, and the polynesians who wakaed around it are evidently Paarsifika peoples, who knew that?

Of course had they ever got around to writing anything down we might have tumbled many years ago as clearly it was a language construct based on Paartnership wern’t it.
