Our future in New Zealand?

With increasing talk of vaccine mandates, from both Labour and National, I thought it would be interesting to see if there are any such things at a nation-wide level around the world, rather than just what is happening in Los Angeles and NYC (Vaccine Passports backfire on Mayor DeBlasio):

Black Lives Matter’s Greater New York chapter plans to protest Carmine’s restaurant in New York City following reports that a hostess tangled with a group of black women over COVID-19 vaccination cards. The group is also claiming that the city’s vaccine passport is racist.

Something like 70%+ of NYC’s Blacks are not vaccinated so it’s Jim Crow 2.0

But it turns out that there is an entire nation that’s pulling this stunt. Lithuania.

That is a series of Tweets from some guy called Gluboco Lietuva, describing life after one month under a strict, society-wide Covid Pass regime, apparently the first in Europe. You can click on the link for the full list but here are three samples:

Employment:

My wife and I have been suspended without pay for 4 weeks. We can’t return to our jobs. Not sure our employers would let us back. Even if they did, our colleagues despise us, wish on social media for our death.

We can’t find new jobs in our professions. My wife and I have very different jobs in very different fields. But all jobs in both our fields now require the Covid Pass. No Pass, no job.

Food:

We’re not allowed to buy food in the local supermarket. We may only shop in small stores with street-facing entrances which mainly sell food,pharma,glasses/contacts, or farming/pet supplies. In our area, that effectively limits us to one small, expensive convenience store.

We now buy food in old Soviet-style markets: outdoors, in parking lots, products sold on street, tiny tables, or from back of cars. Produce, eggs, cheese, meat, fish. Cash only. No Pass required. Not as convenient as a supermarket. But it works for now. Life finds a way.

Heh. I don’t know whether that last line is a deliberate shout out to Jurassic Park or not, but some reference to the movie Witness and its Amish community would be appropriate.

Dentists, Libraries (with their kids), craft stores, toy stores, hardware stores, … everything. It also should be noted that it ultimately won’t work. These people are not going to submit.

This pressure to submit is everywhere. And it’s overwhelming. Our ability to survive has been destroyed. But no matter the suffering imposed and the hardships we must endure, we will never accept the descent into the authoritarianism which the Covid Pass represents.

Government approval to exist in society. Banishment based on arbitrary rules. Recording of all people’s movements. That’s not health; it’s control and power. This new authoritarian control will only grow to ban ever more behavior as bureaucrats push to expand their power.

It’s also interesting to see how the politicians shifted the goalposts as they became more desperate to achieve their goals, whether a certain vaccination rate or Covid-Zero.

You would think that a nation that suffered under the control of first the Nazis and then the USSR for decades, would have a deep cultural attachment to freedom, but perhaps the cultural marks were too heavily scarred the other way.

At a minimum you think they’d know that this is what happens with society-wide Central Government Command and Control efforts. As they fail, sooner or later the Wreckers and Saboteurs must be found. There will also be victims even among those who do comply. I’ll put this here since Facebook and Twitter have already begun censoring it:

Jessica Berg Wilson, 37, of Seattle, Wash., passed away unexpectedly Sept. 7, 2021 from COVID-19 Vaccine-Induced Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia (VITT) surrounded by her loving family. Jessica was an exceptionally healthy and vibrant 37-year-old young mother [two daughters, Bridget (5) and Clara (3)] with no underlying health conditions.

During the last weeks of her life, however, the world turned dark with heavy-handed vaccine mandates. Local and state governments were determined to strip away her right to consult her wisdom and enjoy her freedom. She had been vehemently opposed to taking the vaccine, knowing she was in good health and of a young age and thus not at risk for serious illness. In her mind, the known and unknown risks of the unproven vaccine were more of a threat. But, slowly, day by day, her freedom to choose was stripped away. Her passion to be actively involved in her children’s education—which included being a Room Mom—was, once again, blocked by government mandate. Ultimately, those who closed doors and separated mothers from their children prevailed.

Still, at least the grandparents are alive to enjoy their grandkids, so there’s that.

  1. Yet again, both the main parties are throwing out ‘feelers’ to see what the general population wants and then will act accordingly (science has nothing to do with it).
It’s likely that a ‘carrot & stick’ approach will be tried -get vaccinated or no xmas holidays.
This approach is likely to pull families and relations apart (it already is, I know of two examples)
But in the end Xmas won’t be much fun for anyone, no matter what side of the fence you are on (vaxxed or unvaxxed), as this subject will dominate any Xmas get togethers. As a result, I’m not bothering to take Xmas off this year, I’ve got better things to do.

  2. Hopefully, it will not happen as easily in NZ as it did in Lithuania given that we haven’t had to survive with Nazis and Communists, so it’s far more unnatural to demand this level of compliance from everyone in a country such as NZ where freedom has been taken for granted.

Maybe the govt will try it on, but it will need enforcement by everyone, and I don’t think the reality of having to do that, to bar entry to the unvaxxed is something that your normal, everyday person will be able to stomach for long. Instead, it might rely on fear, the fear the unvaxxed will have in trying to go places that they should not, but that will be temporary, if it comes to that.

In the meantime, as covid starts moving through the country, everyone needs to bear in mind that if you get caught up in the govt dragnet and get a positive test result, then you’ll be imprisoned for 2 weeks. Maybe your entire family will be imprisoned with you.

    • I’m normally an optimist by nature, but you’ve seen the level of unquestioning, unthinking compliance from the NZ population to date on masks and lockdowns so I wouldn’t be surprised if the government could pull this off.

About the only thing I can see stopping them is none other than a youthful/middle-aged Maori cohort who just aren’t getting vaccinated in the way their elders are, and there’s no way Adern and company are going to pull any “racist” suppression on their freedoms. It’s like the Black kickback happening in NYC

My jibe at Lithuania’s history doesn’t apply to Canada, who on the verge of going down the same path

  3. Tom, the Canadians still haven’t done it, though.

The purposes of these stories seem to be to make people comply ahead of time. Bastards.

I do find my reaction in comparison to my husband’s to all this vaccine mandate thing interesting. We both think it could be mandated, so he’s already first jabbed in preparation. While I will only be jabbed if they hold me down or equivalent. My reaction is to not make it easy while as his was to comply ahead of time.

Maybe I might have been jabbed by now if the govt had promised no more lockdowns or restrictions once a certain no. of the population had been jabbed, but they haven’t, so the risk is not worth it. At his point even the threat of not being able to work unless jabbed is a laugh, having seen govt IT projects in action firsthand recently.

Agree re youthful Maori cohort. Last a youngish Maori from South Auckland rang into Newstalk ZB to explain why he (and others like him) probably were not going to get jabbed, a bit part being distrust of the government (good instincts!) . The hosts let him talk for far longer that they would normally, only cutting him off when he started talking vaccine reactions.

We are in very dangerous times and I partially agree re compliance. Though, we don’t know how many of those that wear masks only do so, such as myself, because they don’t want to cause hassle for supermarkets or restaurants that have to enforce compliance. As for lockdowns, they are more difficult to protest visibly, even if you disagree with them.

    • Fear and innuendo is the name of the game. Notice how the 90% target is only hinted at, and not cast in stone. It will be interesting if and when the schools go back.

  4. Notice how the 90% target is only hinted at, and not cast in stone.

Also that’s not 90% fully vaccinated but only with one jab. Add to the sliding scale the fact that recent medical advice overseas was to push the time for the second jab from three weeks to eight, which this government was doing – until they realised it would screw their vaccination rate targets vs lockdown relief before Christmas. So now it’s back to three weeks.

    Science.

    • It’s not “science” it’s politics

And this obsession with vaccination is downright sinister with the so called vaccine passports in the realm of pure EVIL!

This is not about your welfare or mine – it is about central Government gaining control over you and your body

Why is there overt hostility to anybody who suggests treatment options for Covid Patients?

We are being lied too and used as lab rats in a grand experiment in social control

  5. Tom … if you go easy on National and vaccine mandates (sheesh, don’t see your poster boy objecting to vaccine mandates for front-line immigration officers) and I’ll go easy on ACT cuddling up to the Greens and the Maori Party in opposing the Counter-Terrorism Amendment Bill. Deal?

    • Jeez Vet, when are you are going to recognise that I’m an ideologue more than I’m a partisan.

Which is to say that I’m appalled by ACT’s sucking up on this issue even as I understand the politics of it. Basically my response on this issue is Fuck off Seymour, you – and especially your party – should know better. Prick

      🙂

Put it this way. I’m a sort of doppelgänger for Psycho Milt, who can’t stand the Labour Party, votes Green, and gets pissed off with the fucking crystal worshippers in that party.

For me the equivalent was Seymour twerking on the TV show, Dances With the Pollie Stars, although admittedly I only saw it on YouTube.
