Two years to flatten society

with 4 comments

It’s hard to believe but two years have passed since I wrote the following post on January 29, 2020 about something then being called the “Chinese Coronavirus” or the “Wuhan Flu”, based on its emergence in the Wuhan province of China.

Faster please!!

The Trump administration is looking at a variety of measures to contain the fast-spreading virus that has infected roughly 4,700 people across the globe, U.S. health officials told reporters on a conference call Tuesday. White House officials called executives at major U.S. carriers on Tuesday, telling them that a temporary ban on China flights is on the table, according to people familiar with those conversations.

That was from a business news report of the time, and all Trump got in response from the Democrats were cries about how it was all just his usual xenophobia and racism, with the likes of Nancy Pelosi in San Francisco and Mayor DeBlasio in NYC rushing out to their respective Chinatown districts to embrace the Chinese New Year, hug the locals and proclaim that there was nothing to worry about.

I’m sure they’d have been thrilled if they had known that this was going to be the key to defeating Trump.

The original post was on the old No Minister site and I see that there was a similar comment made by one the usual trolls that infested that blog.

Don’t worry Tom, I have the evil Dr Fu Manchu and his villainous slitty eyed henchmen firmly under lock and key. They shall bother you no more.

Kind regards,

My comment at the time:

But still, the best and simplest way to beat a virus is containment, the only problem being the degree of interconnection in our world. As a teenager I recall that our class had to study a 1970’s British TV show that dealt with such a situation, although that was about a bio-warfare-connected outbreak: Survivors.

It concerns the plight of a group of people who have survived an apocalyptic plague pandemic, which was accidentally released by a Chinese scientist and quickly spread across the world via air travel.

I don’t know the stats for NZ-China flights and passengers but given the tourism and business links that now exists between our two nations it’s got to be up there.

I had hoped that using the vast moat around our nation, even with air travel, might protect us from the worst of the pandemic, and perhaps it has, at least in health terms. But it has not in terms of civil liberties and freedom: I would not have believed, two years ago, that we would still be living with draconian controls on our society, even knowing the history of the Spanish Flu, as I posted about a month later using this graph.

We have had 312 posts using the tag “Covid-19 (Wuflu)”.

Even though I’ve come through this quite well, with little impact on my lifestyle and perhaps even been made better off as a result of the government’s vast Keynesian economic response, I’d have to say that I’m sad as I look around my country; from that perspective these have been the two worst years in my life.

And it’s not over yet.

  1. Walked into my little local town on Thursday morning.
    The place was dead.
There is a definite pall over the entire country.
    No one is smiling.
Many idiots wearing masks outside! Even bigger idiots wearing masks while driving alone!
Masks to shut us up and shut us down at the same time!
The atmosphere is one of dread.
Inflation will make things worse. People in debt – I feel really sorry for you.
This bastard of a government is not only not aware, they don’t care either and they have no answers.
    Worst government in my lifetime.
Meanwhile, Chris Luxon thinks that leaning Te Reo is a great idea.
Hang on tight. The next year will be no different from last year and may only deteriorate from here.
Meanwhile, the media is singing the government’s praises but worst of all is that a majority of women voters agree with the media.
    Thanks Winston.

  2. The next few months will be interesting as NZ keeps going down the rabbit hole, while most of the world moves on.

  3. On 10 03 2020 I wrote:

The main danger to the world appears to be not the virus but the the politicians attempting to use the virus to advance their cause, most often to have more and more say over the lives of other people.

    I hate being right!

  4. Just talked to a friend who told me that at his Catholic church in Auckland they saw a guy videoing the Sunday Mass, obviously to see if they could catch them out on numbers and other things under the “Red” settings.

This is what the Labour government has turned us into, although to be fair, it’s obvious that a good chunk of Kiwis were just gagging for such opportunities and the government provided them.
