PUTIN’S WAR ON UKRAINE DAY #10

Putin’s ‘peacekeeping’ (cough) operation continues apace with increasing casualties on both sides and millions forced to flee their homes. Yep, it is a truism that the first causality of war is truth and Putin seems determined to hide the truth from his people shutting down radio and TV stations that dare to question his official line that everything is going to plan and passing laws providing for jail sentences of up to fifteen years for anyone speaking out against his madness Despite that tens of thousands of ordinary Russians have defied Putin and taken to the streets to protest … that takes real courage.

And you get a sense that Putin himself is feeling the pressure declaring that the sanctions imposed on his regime are akin to a declaration of war against Russia.

That takes me to the next point and while I can appreciate Zelenskyy’s increasingly desperate calls for NATO to impose a ‘No Fly Zone’ over the Ukraine in order to take the Russian Airforce out of the equation the reality is that would inevitably lead to a shooting war between NATO and Russia and that could be a precursor to nuclear war.

Meanwhile the sanctions are porous with Europe continuing to import Russian gas and the US Russian oil. Yes, the cutting off of those imports would have a negative impact in Europe and the US but measured alongside the other raft of sanctions it would bring the Russian economy to its knees. It is worth remembering that under Biden the US went from energy self sufficiency to energy dependent on Russia against the altar of climate change and this provides a salutatory lesson to us all about the danger of making your economy too tied/too dependent on another nation … our economy viz a viz China a case at point.

I note that two Republican Senators who participated in a zoom session with the Ukrainian President defied the request by the Ukranian Ambassador not to re-tweet pictures of where Zelenskyy was speaking from least those pictures provide intelligence to the Russian assassination squads targeting the President. Reckless and reprehensible at best. They deserve to pay a heavy price.

Finally and while Russia will win the war they will lose the peace. 43,192.122 Ukrainians will never forget or forgive while, for much of the world, Russia will become a pariah state whose word is never to be trusted. The madman Putin has much to answer for … not the least to his own people.

I note that two Republican Senators who participated in a zoom session with the Ukrainian President defied the request by the Ukranian Ambassador not to re-tweet pictures of where Zelenskyy was speaking from least those pictures provide intelligence to the Russian assassination squads targeting the President. My first thought was how on earth the Russians would be able to target him on the basis of photos of a zoom call?

As a result I had to check this out and I found that one of them was Marco Rubio, not noted as being stupid or reckless. Here’s the Tweet:

I then decided to check further because I suspected a Democrat-MSM hit job, and surprise, surprise, surprise….:

The Left’s outrage brigade was in full flower on Saturday when they learned that Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Steve Daines (R-MT) had tweeted a photo of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky during a Zoom call. I suspect everyone reading this is squinting at their screen and muttering, “So?”

Well, apparently the Ukrainian Ambassador asked that no one share anything about the meeting while the parties were in the meeting. Rubio and Danes tweeted a photo of Zelensky while Zelensky was on the screen, and apparently that was akin to giving targeting coordinates to the Rooskies.

Ok, so bad form not to wait another ten minutes for the meeting to end, but nothing deserving of the shrieking Left attacks. Other Senators, Democrat and GOP alike sent out similar photos of the zoom meeting within minutes of it ending. When it comes to Ukraine, the left lives in an Austin Powers movie.

You really must stop paying attention to the usual suspects in the MSM, Vet, especially when it comes to any NZ reporting on the GOP.

Tom … if I were one of those in the room and the Ukrainian ambassador asked me to do something then I wouldn’t argue the toss. The stakes are too high. I’m happy to call out the two Republican Senators just as I’m happy to call out Biden. But heh,…. nothing zip, zero about Putin in your response. You really need to get a sense of proportion.

As I said, bad form, but that does not justify the shrieking of Rubio’s partisan opponents, especially when it’s so stupid.

Re Putin, I have my own post on this subject coming up.

    Just a couple of comments.
Putins peacekeeping force, you mean like the USA led invasion of Iraq to bring democracy there?

Yep, the propaganda from both? all? sides of this invasion is to be treated with extreme suspition.

Agreed, a NO fly zone or Nato troops on the ground in Ukraine will herald the nuclear exchange none of us want.

I see that 30% of Ukrainians support Russia…..So don’t fall in to the Jacinda propaganda trap (ie the BS about the team of 5 million-It wasnt true then and certainly isnt true now)…

For Henare … reference your assertion that 30% of Ukrainians support the Russian invasion of their country.

For Tom … I don’t make a habit of gas-lighting my fellow commentators but really your assertion in support of the two republicans tweet is an an indication that you are well behind the eight ball in real-time targeting which has advanced exponentially in the last little while. The corollary to your assertion is that you are calling the Ukrainian Ambassador a twit. All very easy for the comfort of your living room. You seem locked to the mantra that the Republicans are always right and the Democrats are always wrong. A more balanced view is that the Republicans are sometimes right and sometimes wrong. Vice versa for the Democrats. I note the Republican ain’t rushing to defend their two senators.

… you are well behind the eight ball in real-time targeting which has advanced exponentially in the last little while

Given your military history and contacts perhaps you could point me to some papers that can explain not the real-time targeting but how the target is supposed to be located in the first place from a Zoom call? Given my IT background I can imagine a couple of ways it could be done via hacking, but even then having a US Senator sending out a Tweet photo he took of his computer screen in the USA really wouldn’t help such targeting very much, even if the Russians were monitoring their Twitter accounts constantly.

You seem locked to the mantra that the Republicans are always right and the Democrats are always wrong.

Not at all. In fact there is a GOP Senator who said something incredibly, dangerously stupid the other day so I’ll certainly be writing about that. Funnily enough I’ve not heard any Democrats attack him about that, leading me to think they may agree.

But I do think the Democrats are wrong most of the time, and in this case I’ve seen no claim from the Ukrainians that security was the reason, only that claim from a couple of Democrat Senators, and as such it’s just the usual partisan sniping and I get rather tired of centre-right people around the world picking up Democrat talking points. It’s funny that I rarely see the reverse.

Tom ….do you REALLY REALLY think the Russian’s weren’t monitoring the Zoom call. You would be naive to think otherwise. I repeat … the stakes were too high hence the Ukrainian Ambassadors request.

This is the problem with non-tech people – they imagine that if something is considered possible with tech, then it is being done with precision. Even with omniscience.

Tech is not god-like, Vet. Not even close.

“If you had started sanctions months ago, there would not have been war,” Zelenskyy said during his Zoom call with members of Congress Saturday morning, a Senate source told the New York Post.

    BWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH

So now we know why a couple of Democrat Senators in that call jumped out about Rubio’s photo Tweet. The real story of the meeting, the Top Of The Headline, was the hero of the hour slamming their boss, President Oatmeal Brain, and they couldn’t have that so instead they came up with a juicy little morsel that all their mates in the MSM would jump on.

And even Right-wingers fell for it hook, line and sinker.

No wonder the Left keeps winning on the issues.
