Or Happy St Andrews Day, which marks the beginning of Advent as we head toward Christmas. It’s also Scotland‘s official national day.
Ella Roberts, who is actually Australian, is almost as beautiful as her voice, although I think she’s reddened her locks up a bit for this video where she sings a classic Scottish song of lamentation and loss.
But I don’t mind the red hair: it’s pretty much what you expect when you’ve got tartan genes.
No red hair in my Scottish family background. Maybe it is because my father emigrated to New Zealand from the Isle Of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides in 1927. We have visited my 6 first cousins 4 or 5 times since 1977 and I cannot recall seeing any red hair among their descendants either.
The Vikings missed your lot then? 😉
My somewhat limited research suggests that everyone connected to the Isle Of Lewis has ancestry back to a ruler named Alexander around the 12th century.
I haven’t followed through on that but mrspdm and I are doing Ancestry DNA tests in the next few weeks – who knows what they will reveal.
As an aside there is every chance that I am distantly related to Donald Trump. My paternal Grandmother was a McLeod from Uig on Lewis while Trumps mother was a McLeod from a settlement just out of Stornoway. My two cousins who still live on Lewis know his sister quite well and spoke highly of her when we discussed the possible connection – not so nice about Donald T though.
