An apparent consensus is claiming rising human driven emissions caused the disastrous flooding from Tropical Cyclone Gabriel to much of the North Island but in particular Gisborne, East Coast and Hawkes Bay with anecdotal claims of rainfall totals around 700/800 mm.
Eighty five years ago a similar rain event caused similar chaos with, again, anecdotal claims of totals up to 1000mm.
Now when will someone have the probity and necessary cojones to perhaps answer Maureen Pugh’s question relating to rising CO2 levels being the cause of the 2023 rain event. It won’t happen because there is no such causation, merely saying otherwise is no explanation
I have absolutely no idea what CO2 levels were back in 1938 but then I do not care what they are today as until some scientist with the credibility and the research background around such matters explains in plain language what the actual relationship involved is between rainfall and CO2 I will remain in my chosen state of oblivion.
I am yet to be led to disbelieve my understanding there is highly likely a direct connection between the massive undersea seismic event near Tonga late 2022 and early 2023 ejecting much additional sea water high into the atmosphere and likely the stratosphere of earth that gravity and weather will return to land and sea, some of which was involved in Cyclone Gabriel and also the excessive rainfalls along the Australian East coast
So a larger equally destructive rain event some eighty five years ago likely had more rainfall associated but although some “slash” not the exponential quantity of debris that the idiotic ban on burning leftover forestry remnant has delivered c2023.
Maybe Mr Luxon can direct me to that reading list, however I will resist holding my breath.
” idiotic ban on burning leftover forestry remnant”
GD, my understanding is that the burnoff ban is largely self-imposed by the forest growers (Association ?) Too many burns kept embers alight for a month or two and then re-ignited and spread into unprotected forest areas. Insurance companies not satisfied.
18 years’ Rural Fire attendance on that one. Still not enough practical.
