The Internet was recently having fun with Saint Greta The Climate Puppet because of a Tweet she put out at the height of her fame in 2018 about how we needed to stop using fossil fuels in the next five years or the human race would kill itself off with Global Warming.

But the thing is that there is a fifty year history of this crap, and the following is not even the oldest:

Increasingly it happens whenever a Left-wing politician gets elected to power; that they’ve only got five years or four years or eight years, depending on the length of their term and possibility of getting reelected, to solve the problem before “a tipping point” is reached. We’ve been through so many of these “tipping points” that you’d think they’d have simply accepted their own hysteria, given up, and focused instead on having fun and getting richer, which would actually be the best way of dealing with AGW effects.

But hair shirt doomster Ideology has always had a special place in the human heart and in addition there are increasingly large amounts of money available for renewable energy projects – either via direct taxpayer subsidies or indirect increases in fossil fuel energy costs. Those are the reasons that these predictions of doom have not stopped, and also why there’s no shame or sense of embarrassment involved.

The reason that these assholes continue to get away with this hysterical End-Of-The-World crap is that people’s memories are short, combined with the fact that although the Internet is forever, the people invested in all this are also invested in memory-holing their old, failed predictions.

The Extinction Clock

The predictions are ranked not by when they were made (the oldest was Huppert’s 1956 prediction for “Peak Oil” by 2000) but by their predicted date of disaster. To see the oldest, scroll to the bottom of the site. It’s notable that their frequency has increased with the decades.

The following is one of my favourites given who is making the prediction:

From MSNBC (Reuters/AP), quote: “A leading U.S. climate researcher says the world has a 10-year window of opportunity to take decisive action on global warming and avert catastrophe. […] ‘I think we have a very brief window of opportunity to deal with climate change … no longer than a decade, at the most,’ [James] Hansen said Wednesday at the Climate Change Research Conference in California’s state capital”.

BTW, in the last ten years the world has spent several trillion dollars to nudge our fossil fuel energy production from 82% of all energy to 81%.

I guess we are doomed.
