From today’s Australian:-
New Zealand’s National Party has been dealt a severe blow over one of its key policies, with economists saying the Foreign Buyers Tax would bring in millions of dollars less than National’s estimates.
A report from an allegedly ‘independent’ economist alleges the projected revenue will be only a third of that forecast. Funny thing is, this fellow was strangely quiet about Labour’s mythical projection of household savings from the removal of GST from fresh fruit and vegies.
Mr Luxon’s response was spot on.

‘You’ll always find a disagreeable economist’ or words to that effect.
I guess thats a smart arse answer that evades answering the question properly.
A more helpful answer may have been along the lines that our tax policy includes a number of assumptions, and we recognize that there maybe issues. However in our planning we have allowed for these contingencies. We envisage that some sources of additional revenue may under-perform and others over perform. At the end of the day we believe the savings from the State sector offer plenty of scope for further cost saving gains.
As I have mentioned previously it was less than circumspect to go for such a complicated, to the average punter, plan when a far simpler one would have sufficed.
For instance, sticking the fuel taxes down by say 40 cents a litre would have been simple, effective and understandable. And very hard to criticize as everyone knows we have had it stuck to us by Labour to fund their cycle way wet dreams..
Yes it was a smart arse answer but it was correct. The media would not have reported the long version.
Yes No it was a smart arse answer because it was a needlessly complicated policy, and therefore as you point out nobody may have reported the complicated answer ( complicated to some people)
Ergo a simple tax policy would not have put them in this position. The complicated solution could have come after they were elected, and the press would have to report otherwise the suckling hind tit they use would be clamped.
It’s one of those silly policies that looks important, but doesn’t actually do anything. Nobody’s going to take it up.
There is $30billion hanging around just by cancelling Michael Woods black hole – the light rail to – wherever he thought it was going.
The best part about such media Bias is very few watch and/or listen, not many of those who do will grasp what is said unless there is a KFC voucher involved, meanwhile the grocery bill up another 8% is pretty convincing along with NZ$3 gas, now that sort of publicity pretty difficult to counter.
GD … gas pricing has got me beat. $2.939 here in Paiha vs $3.119 in Whangarei just 71 km away and adjacent to Marsden point where the tankers still unload even tho the refinery ain’t any more.
Amazing what a little competition will do.
Good on Waitomo. Long may they prosper.
Vet $2.78 to $2.83 in Hastings yesterday.
Gull often dearer than Caltex in Karamu Road – they are about 250 yards away from each other.
Pray tell, GD. What is Waitomo?
Waitomo Fuels have a chain of unmanned stations around the North Island. Same scenario as Gull.
Waitomo opened a station on Hutt Road in Wellington, just up from Thorndon Quay, a couple of years ago.
Up to that point Z had a station a few km’s north of that, unmanned but the usual expensive Z pricing.
Suddenly overnight they were matching Waitomo, and for some reason changed the brand name to Caltex.
Another Miracle of Capitalism.
Talking of miracles I see super Luxon is picking winners, Technolgy is the one. Now where have I heard that one before, ah yes the John Key childrens play book. It didnt work then but oh dear lets pull it out and give it another whirl.
The clueless bald twerp has never issued a spot on response in his life. The example quoted above is no exception.
You silly buggers make me laugh. If you don’t want Luxon as PM, are you going to vote for Hipkins?
You miss the point.
Nobody is saying he wont get in, a you could stand a torque wrench and it would win as the voter would percieve it as better than Chumpkins.
However that is not to say the torque wrench would have some failings.
And Luxons are on full display. His naviety around his tax policy, and tech policy are pretty self evident i would have thought. Like wise te reo and climate change combined with the net zero foolishness.
If I didn’t know better I’d swear the egg headed fool was deliberately trying on purpose to lose the unlosable election.
Cant we do a Joe Biden and keep the idiot in a basement before he causes more damage.
He’s living proof you don’t have to be smart to run an airline.
