First elected Mayor of Selwyn District at age 35, Sam Broughton has had a productive and successful time as mayor and now has risen to giddy heights as Chairman of Local Government New Zealand.
Running a District that is one of the fastest growing, in any measure chosen, is a challenge and on the surface it could be claimed one well met by the mayor and his successive councils, particularly since the seismic events beginning in 2010 has accelerated.
I will allow he might have been misquoted, highly likely in the current media obsessive attitudes to performing as an unelected opposition to the three party coalition currently governing New Zealand.
The Government and the relative Minister Simeon Brown have only cancelled the very racist and undemocratic removal of the right of citizens to question by referendum the introduction of Racist based Maori Wards.\No Asian ward, no Male only representation long abandoned, only a treatment for citizens claiming from various degrees of ancestry a particular right to extra representation, in the affairs run by local authorities
You, Mr Broughton as the Chair of the oversight body for all local authority do not have any voice beyond representing all those disparate entities and just as the Governor General must leave personal politics, prior allegiance and involvement behind in representing all the people.
The three party Coalition formed following the General Election has a mandate to reverse the mendacious and demeaning introduction of race based governance in all its forms
Your insertion of what must be largely a personal view is not only unwelcome it is an an abuse of your office IMHO.
I am assuming the Mayor of Kaipara District who was on Hosking Breakfast and may well have more Maori citizens in his district than your Selwyn area, was very supportive of the reinstatement of the democratic right to question actions of elected councils on this matter is a member of Democracy NZ so you certainly did not speak for him.
If I remember correctly GD the luvvies dumped on the Kaipara Mayor a few years ago because he was totally opposed to Maori Wards and starting council meetings with Karakia.
He is the man they should have made head honcho of LGNZ.
It seems to be the case that those who can do, those who can’t adopt racism and go into Local Government.
