Since an itinerant Australian came to New Zealand and abused a deficient system around arms controls with active connivance from Politicians and the Police led arms licencing system, New Zealand has embarked on a system that world wide has been discovered to be almost ineffective in reducing arms crime activity.
A “Register” of all firearms held.
Canada went along this track for a decade before abandoning the colossal waste of money for little if any effect on criminal activity involving such weapons.
“The Canada Firearms Center quickly rose to 600 employees and the cost of the effort climbed past $600 million. In 2002 Canada’s auditor general released a report saying initial cost estimates of $2 million (Canadian) had increased to $1 billion as the government tried to register the estimated 15 million guns owned by Canada’s 34 million residents.”
Of course the participation of criminals in this gargantuan waste of Taxpayer funding was exactly zero, why in hell would people who live beyond the law suddenly comply with a draconian legislative move requiring their cooperation.
“Stopped Laughing yet” it only gets worse.
Over 60% of crime involving weapons in Canada was defined as being contributed by Hand Guns?
The Canadian legislation chaos only involved the estimated 15 Million “Long Guns” held by the 34 million Canadians.
Most spousal assaults involving weapons were perpetrated with knives over firearms.
New Zealand responsible Fully licenced Firearms owners have a great fear that such a register will be accessed by criminals acquiring accurate information from illegal accessing the stored Information, a sort of online supermarket if you will.
Oh no, never, screeched the idiots in charge, the information will be securely held.
Please desist with the laughter this is serious.
Last week in court was a lovely little lady who worked at Transit New Zealand, well may be the Te Lingo version Waka Kotahi and accessed information on the system in exchange for methamphetamine for her live in lover so he could discover the address of people he deemed had “Offended” him in traffic matters to enable his justice to be administered.
Nice gentle Nadine Ericson is not a first accused of such matters so who can assure armed New Zealanders they will remain immune to such breach of “secure” Information?
Anecdotal evidence abounds of people being charged over accessing Health data, Transport data, even education data yet the morons running with the firearms register consider they are smart sufficient to avoid a criminal discovering exactly where a Category involving hand gun ownership can be accessed.
Hello is there a functioning brain cell out there in cuckoo land.
Publicity is lauding the take up of registering by Firearm holders, dollar to a knob of goat shit they are predominantly owners of a .22 or similar ostensibly to enable a pesky possum to be disabled along with a few rainwater gutters an odd garage roof and other itinerant bits of property never intended to be damaged.
In a brief career as a vetting agent for NZ Police on Banks Peninsula that ended when over two decades before Tarrant was so dismissively given the legal status he needed to arm himself with the weapon and ammunition to slaughter the Fifty Muslim worshippers at two Christchurch Mosques, because I maintained to fulfil the Arms Act requirements I needed to face to face all parties involved in granting a Licence. The Arms office claimed it could be done by Phone which as Brenton Tarrant proved without question that was a false belief. Hell his two “Independent” Referees were related and only known as Internet companions. no requirement for a close relative living with him and the other one a person who knew him well living apart.
Anyhow I saw some weaponry that would have astounded even neighbours and friends of applicants for Category status beyond the ancient .22s, Cat A.
On file, how difficult for a friend of a friend such as Dear Nadine above, to access where a couple of AK47s and perhaps a glock or two, even just a semi auto shotty to be rearranged with a hacksaw into a gangland warfare weapon of choice.
Give me strength, Criminals are not totally stupid in the cunning and manipulative stakes, should the State acquire the locations of desired weapons you can be absolutely assured a criminal mind will find a way to access it, dont be such idiots as to think otherwise.
Forget the wasted money, the inconvenience foisted on a law abiding public, having such information on the interwebby is plain arrogant stupidity.
That people is what the Luvies promoting “The Arms Supermarket Stock List” is where the greatest dangers lie virtually unprotected.
NZ had registration until 1985 which the police said had not stopped or solved a single crime and was tying up a lot of police time, cost a lot and was very Inaccurate, so we got rid of it. Registration is for confiscation as most politicians would like to turn us from citizens into subjects, it has no other use.
Yah. As my Dad was an ex-cop he wasn’t too happy about the scrapping of the gun registration since he thought it would make detective work on gun crimes easier, which is a logical conclusion.
But he talked to an old mate of his who had retired from the Force only a few years earlier and he told Dad that the cops supported scrapping it because it was bloody useless.
Of course people will say that with computers all will be good, as opposed to that old paper-based system (I don’t think they ever got it into the Wanganui computer system when that was happening), but in fact the real problem is GIGO, and that’s as true of computer systems as paper filing systems.
Two comments Tom The scrapping of the Paper registry was around when the Wanganui Computer came on line linking, DoJ, Police and Traffic., a move that should have had the proponents soiling their pants.
The other point as a gun owner of some years there was a deterrent effect from any one with the cognitive abilities now long departed from the criminals , in knowing a spent bullet even partially deformed from its ending could be linked to a particular weapon.
That knowledge did enhance care and consideration where a rifle bullet might finish.
A neighbour in a previous life lost his Brother in Law on the West Coast from a .22 round randomly fired over a mile away that hit in the head killing instantly.
The current mnifestation will only be awarded success by bobby sox, roman sandal, cardigan wearing ignoramus sitting in offices in a Molesworth street cubicle at PNHQ.
My experience suggests the Police should be as far away from the nonsensical apparition as possible
