I ask because of the the video shown in yesterday’s post on Britain’s laws on “hate speech”, of a senior prosecutor describing what the British Police are doing in searching social media sites, plus these two videos below.

The first is of two police officers arriving at a man’s home to arrest him because complaints have been made about his Facebook comments.

The second is this interview:

We will throw the full force of the law at people. And whether you’re in this country committing crimes on the streets, or committing crimes from further afield online, we will come after you.

Now he does not specifically mention the word, “extradition”, but it’s hard to interpret “further afield” in any other way regarding law enforcement. However, as our commentator, “Exiled in Texas” pointed out on that post yesterday the USA has a long-standing rule that they will not extradite people for crimes committed in other nations unless those are also crimes in the USA, so I think Musk and company are safe.

Whether that applies to New Zealanders I don’t know because, although the Labour Party “Hate Speech” law proposals were ditched by the new government there may be other laws on the books regarding speech that could match those in Britain in kind, if not in extent.

In any case, if you did so much as re-Tweet something like video of a riot, or a burning car (say as a warning to your mates to avoid an area), you’d could become a target for the British Government and the Police, especially if you’re in Great Britain.

And even if an arrest did not result in charges being laid, let alone a conviction, in our Internet-connected world, word could easily get back here, resulting in the destruction of young person’s career and effectively damaging their life in other ways as well.

And take a good look at the face of Rowling and that prosecutor in yesterday’s post. Those are actually the faces of totalitarianism; not some wild-eyed ideologue or evil looking movie villian, but rather ordinary-looking men with dead eyes. However they are also middle-level bureaucrats with the firm conviction of their own righteousness and the power to enforce it. This is how liberty dies.

And I’ll bet every one of them will tell you that Trump is a dictator who will destroy democracy. But as the famous American essayist Tom Wolfe once wrote in one of his books (actually quoting a French socialist writer named Jean-François Revel):

The dark night of fascism is always descending in the United States and yet lands only in Europe.

And Labour PM Sir Keir Stamer provides a hefty thud.
