Hindus in India and abroad are rallying against the ongoing Muslim mob violence in Bangladesh. Armed Muslim gangs attacked Hindus across Bangladesh after anti-government protests ousted the country’s  long-serving prime minister last week. “Hundreds of Hindu houses, businesses and temples have been vandalised since the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” Reuters reported earlier this week citing local groups.

Hindus, who make up about 8 percent of country’s 170 million population, “faced at least 205 attacks across 52 districts,” Indian business daily Mint reported Monday. Along with Hindus, Bangladesh’s tiny Christian and Buddhist monitories — who jointly account for less than one percent of the total population, also targeted by Islamist mobs, social media posts suggest.

Aside from the human rights aspect there is, as with the Israel-Iran conflict (the latter waging was via proxies like Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen), the possibility that this turns into a nation-state conflict. India and Pakistan fought a war over the creation of the state of Bangladesh more than fifty years ago, on top of other armed clashes they’ve had since the original partition from India in 1947 that created Pakistan as Muslims and Hindus largely went their separate ways into each nation amidst vast loss of life.

Pakistan, an Islamic Republic from the start, was held in place for decades by a strong British heritage in its military and then by the USA as part of the latter’s Cold War alliance, while India remained “non-aligned” even as it fought with largely Soviet weapons. On a side note, in Chuck Yeager’s autobiography the famous test pilot writes of visiting Pakistan in 1971 to advise its Air Force and although he never owned up to it there are strong rumours from his friends that he flew in combat against the Indian Air Force. Suffice to say that the USA trends more to India’s side nowadays than Pakistan.

And India is now governed by a government led by Narendra Modi, who has been the PM for a decade now and cemented in a very militant Hindu-oriented environment in that nation’s institutions.

How long will they stay out of this fight?
