As a follower and supporter of All Black rugby since 1956 I was appalled at two instances by players, apparently condoned by coaching staff and team Management, at the Italy Match I viewed on Sky TV just after 9am on Sunday 24 November 2024.
Both were insults to all New Zealanders and in particular non Maori and those Maori in the team and population who do not support the activists who politically align themselves with The Maori Political party and specifically their opposition to the Treaty Principals Bill that is passing through Parliament from now until about June 2025.
Let me elaborate by itemising the two evens that not only annoy me but also deeply worry me because in my view there is no room for Political grandstanding by any All Black team or any individual All Black Players selected to play in an International Test or for that matter as part of an All Black Touring team overseas.
- TJ Perenara as Haka leader politicised the pre match Haka by making reference to the Treaty Of Waitangi more than once during the Haka. I understand that may have been sanctioned by Team Managers and if so that is an indictment on them and their respect for all New Zealanders. It also reflects very badly on the NZRU Chief Executive and Management if it was referred to them for approval. In fact if that is the case then you have shown contempt to all of the New Zealand public who support New Zealand’s National game and the game will be on a slippery downhill slope from now on.
- After the match I have seen a photo of the team celebrating and promoting the Tino Rangitaratanga Flag. That too is an insult to all All Black supporters and New Zealanders in general. All Blacks should be politically neutral when representing their country and Rugby in New Zealand is in a sorry state administratively when such actions are condoned at the highest levels. By the way the New Zealand flag is the approriate one for the All Blacks to support – you know like Olympians do!!!!
I hear of people taking the following actions as part of their dissatisfaction with these two events:
Cancelling SKY Television Subscriptions.
Refusing to support NZ Rugby sponsors products.
Writing direct to sponsors.
They (NZRU) Ask What Outcome I Would Like:
- I would like a public denouncement of the Haka and Flag incidents jointly by the NZRU Board Chairman and the CEO as soon as possible.
- I would like the Haka leader and any player or member of the touring party involved in the flag incident publicly censured.
Already two days have passed and we have heard nothing from those people who are charged with doing what is best for NZ Rugby. The silence takes me back to the 1950’s and 60’s when Tom Morrison and Jack Sullivan reigned supreme and `No Comment’ was the order of the day.
Those days are well gone and you people need to stand up and face the music.
PDM, A fine letter!
I thoroughly endorse your comments, your admonishments, and your 2 suggested outcomes.
I have little hope for any sensible outcome.
I guess Perenara’s arrogance was matched by team management ignorance, and bad judgement.
They seem to struggle selecting a winning team, the political stadium offers little chance of betterment in those efforts.
Thanks rossco.
I hope you are complaining too. JJO said he was going to.
I cannot believe that this ridiculous incident is occupying the minds and the media to the extent it evidently is. NZ has far more (far more) pressing issues.
Seems to have dropped off the front pages today.
Probably because the general public are fighting back and challenging Perenara as Leader of the Haka and the NZRU who give every impression of condoning it.
You letter, while quite rightly expressing an opinion I share, will have zero effect on the NZRU.
The NZRU and the Super Rugby teams are fully on board with prioritising Maori culture over everyone else. This includes stays on Marae pre-season, where of course they are feed the highly selective and slanted views of history by Maori ‘cultural’ advisors.
I complained to the Hurricanes about the disgraceful political posturing by the Hurricanes women’s team and their redneck government slur. No response from the Hurricanes board, beyond their email inbox monitor saying my email had been forwarded.
As a result I have not watched any super rugby since March 2024 and haven’t bothered with the All Blacks, bar the France match as I weakened and want to see the game – a mistake as frankly the All Blacks are now a team lacking in loose forward size and also tactical smarts, i.e. a pale shadow of the 2015 side…
The only thing the NZRU understand is cashflow and ratings. Just stop watching, stop buying tickets, stop buying merchandise. They don’t deserve your support or your cash – the NZRU have only disdain for their traditional support base and are actively political with things like this incident and the earlier BLM rubbish.
Trev you are probably right re no response but then again if enough people complain – so readers get to it. Here is the link courtesy of JJO:

As far ad Super Rugby teams staying on Marae that is their choice. They are not the All Blacks flaunting political propaganda at on overseas test match venue.
you miss the point .. The marae stays are about indoctrination and that leads to what you see in the last AB Haka…..
Anyway i wont bend the NZRUs email addresses ear as it is pointless. I just will, like any disgruntled customer, walk my wallet out the door and never return
Trev you are probably right with your first para re indoctrination. I have no idea about that aspect.
I am not sure the Rugby Union make them go though – surely that is a franchise owner and management choice and they could as easily go to an Exclusive Brethren church camp.
Very well done, I have watched and played Rugby for many years and now will no longer be supporting them.
Thanks Colin. Good to see you here.
Get stuck in and send a complaint. It is very easy to follow.
