Syrian rebels have declared victory over President Bashar al-Assad’s regime after fighters entered Damascus on Saturday night and the president reportedly fled the country. Two army officials told Reuters that Assad boarded a plane and left to an unknown destination with rebels closing in on the capital.

Syrian state TV airs statement saying Assad has been overthrown.
I wouldn’t give a nickel for the survival of the Christian communities on Syria’s Med coast.
When they start smashing down your statues you’re either gone or soon to be gone.
Twenty minutes from Damascus? Kohimarama is twenty minutes from the Auckland CBD.

Beloved Wife and I have been enjoying some ’90’s nostalgia by watching the great, if strange, TV series Northern Exposure, and in watching all this unfold I was reminded of this story from Marilyn Whirlwind:
Marilyn: There was a warrior who had a fine stallion. Everyone said how lucky he was to have such a horse.
“Maybe”, he said.
One day, the stallion ran off. The people said the warrior was unlucky.
“Maybe”, he said.
The next day the stallion returned, leading a string of fine ponies. The people said it was very lucky.
“Maybe”, the warrior said.
Later, the warrior’s son was thrown from one of the ponies and broke his leg. The people said it was unlucky.
“Maybe”, the warrior said.
The next week, the chief lead a war party against another tribe. Many young men were killed. But, because of his broken leg, the warrior’s son was left behind, and so was spared.
Assad could fall over simply because the Russians are distracted with other issues. If Assad goes, what happens then is the big question.
This has obvious 1978-79 Shah of Iran overthrow vibes and look how well that turned out 🙁
They say “history never repeats but it often rhymes”.
Trump can’t get into office quickly enough in my opinion.
I’m sure sleepy joe will do a great job of handling this just like he did with Afghanistan 🙄
