I had a double dose of Peters speech yesterday and a few things struck me from it.
Why the double dose – let me explain. Firstly I browsed it on Stuff but that was obviously all out of order and hard to follow so I listened on You Tube last evening to get a better picture.
The following few things quickly became apparent.
Firstly Peters revelled in engaging with the hecklers and other disruptive people in the audience. Which raises the question – were they plants?
Secondly he was on full attack against Chris Hipkins and Grant Robertson.
Thirdly he had a very compliant audience. A big gathering but, outside of the few hecklers a very compliant gathering and it was noticeable that even then he did not take questions.
Fourthly I cannot recall him mentioning National or ACT although he did assure people the Coalition was working well.
Fifthly unless I missed it he did not mention The Treaty of Waitangi. Which means he did not address the Maorification of New Zealand.
Sixthly he again advocated for New Zealand to withdraw from the Paris Accord.
Conclusion:
In all I thought it was somewhat underwhelming which I guess was to be expected eighteen months out from the next election but, there were times on the You Tube video that Winston Peters looked an old man. To the extent it made me wonder if he will want to be leader into the next election.
Then again it is all he has known for almost 30 years – so what say you.
When I got back from the US over twenty years ago and found out that Winston was still in the picture I figured then that the only way he would ever leave Parliament was feet first and I continue to hold to that.
You are probably right Tom.
He has left twice, but keeps coming back. Partly because the media misses him and spruiks him when he’s absent.
