I do not think it is.

The Melons are opposing roadside testing for drugs, besides alcohol, long proven to be a cause of vehicle smashes where law abiding citizens can be broken and killed by drivers impaired by any of many drugs now a part of life.

So much a part of societal lawlessness that allegations of illicit drug use by political leaders remain as only rumoured because officialdom and journalists decline to provide any covering reporting or investigation.

Images of a recent Prime Minister approaching a dias while sniffling and wiping their nose on a sleeve have been on internet viewing available for anyone.

A main theme of the party party lies with a possibility that a lawful use of certain substances might fall into convicted felons due to prescribed substances being detected.

A couple of counters to that inane dream.

One, there will be very simple ways to provide evidence the substance was lawfully obtained, along with a clear warning driving while using is not a legal defence, already such warnings come with medications I have encountered.

Secondly it will be very simple for provable advice being given to a patient, driving is prohibited if the substance is taken.

So no to the melons, driving impairment that is unquestioned for alcohol as measured in a blood sample, has equal impairment for many recreational drugs easily obtained from certain Lawnmower supply retailers, as hinted to have been not unknown for recent top officials in rumours never revealed as truthful or not.

One of the commonest drugs involved for many today is not cannabis at levels of concentration many times that of the weed used by the derelicts at “Woodstock” over fifty years ago. It is Methamphetamine, a drug having abilities to enhance belief in personal performance so enhancing it was handed out to German soldiers during WW2 by the Nazi government as ‘Pervitin” giving significant boost to belief and performance. During my first response training two decades ago we were often warned about such behaviour boost for imbibers of meth, such that confrontation was stupid, and retreat and self preservation were the only response.

Recent evidence based on sampling of waste water suggests that Meth is now a serious threat to law enforcement in NZ, something many have been confronting for years. It is well understood many unlawful acts are directly connected to methamphetamine use.

No problem I guess for a party that is currently campaigning for reductions in Police powers, even to abolish them, any further evidence not required.
