Details of the Justice Select Committee decision on the Treaty Principles Bill have been released and the recommendation by majority is that the Bill does not proceed.
I do not dispute that decision because anyone who listened to a number of the Oral Submissions would be aware that they were heavily weighted against the Bill.
Select Committee Chairman James Meager issued the following statement. You will note the Herald did not have the courtesy to say James was the Select Committee Chairman.
`James Meager, a National Party member of the committee, released a statement separately to the report in which he highlighted the “thorough process of scrutiny” the legislation had received.
He noted that the committee received more than 300,000 written submissions and requests for 16,000 oral submissions.
Meager said 90% of the written submissions opposed the legislation, with 8% in support and 2% not clearly stating their position. With regard to oral submissions, 85% opposed, 10% were in support and 5% were unstated.’
I say bullshit on those percentages.
They may be numerically close but, anyone who followed the Bill through the full process to date knows that the closing date was extended solely to allow Maori and other anti bill activists to get hand written submissions in from children and other disinterested people.
How many of those were from eligible voters?
Very, very few I say!!!
