There are reports abounding how woke and disconnected the UK Police are becoming as the once proud and competent UK “Bobbies continue a slide into an abyss. The force begun by one Robert Peel to bring order to an increasingly unlawful group within the Society of London in the third decade of the 19th century.

An unarmed group of what became known as “Peelers”, later the London Bobby, on the streets in uniform to bring order to that city, that became a blueprint for the world at large. “The force” was there to guide the lost, assist the elderly and infirm, and with an image even amongst the criminal class as being fair, reasonable and no threat to the law abiding. They remain to this day unarmed as opposed to many such outfits around the world who are routinely armed and all too often resort to their weaponry in everyday law enforcement. One particularly related case in Colorado has a deputy in court on charges of careless weapon use leading to Manslaughter. The officer – US jurisdictions do not have constables, the equivalent is Officer, while ironically in the UK the top policeman is a Chief Constable – made a routine “traffic stop” and when the driver failed to comply opened fire with his side arm and killed a young man who later was identified as a New Zealander.

Anyway back to the headline, UK police have been reported as warning an elderly man with hearing loss, merely asking a person whose english is a second language to “Speak slowly and make their language clear” could be charged with “Hate Speech”.

For all that is holy I have asked many a call center person to either speak clearly or transfer my call to someone who has better command of the English Language. I guess in the UK I am likely a recidivist Hate Speech offender as I have no intention to change my ways. Mind you I encounter equal difficulty with what passes for speech from some of the young people graduated from the NZ Education system, who I need to understand clearly to reach a successful verbal interchange.

Such a polite asking of someone to make their speech clearer is potentially “Hate Speech”. Cease with what ever the imbibed substance might be and leave any “offense” at home before venturing out.
