I appears the increasingly insane world may very well have forgotten?
Victory in Europe, VE Day
This day, in Europe, marks the 80th anniversary of the major step in ending the disaster that evolved from the reparations and failing world order set up after the War to end All Wars killing an estimated 20 million soldiers and civilians, that emerged in the 1930s with Fascism a supposed counter to communism, ended with the total surrender of Nazi Germany. Beginning with the election of Mussolini in Italy in 1922 then Hitler in Germany in 1934, and Spain in 1936 with a three year civil war, Europe had descended into another war this one even more deadly killing a possible 75 Million people.
Today in a total absence of a statesman anywhere and under the dominion of another failed super theoretical peace outfit, corrupt and increasingly ineffective, the world seems bent on another round of killings.
Ukraine, Israel and now Kashmir, all involved in war and China Iran openly fomenting threats, The United Nations are revealed as anything but what the grandiose title might suggest.
Should the Kashmir dispute elevate to nuclear, a potential 200 million dead is thought possible and that could happen in less than one week.
WW1 took over four years and four months, while the next slaughter WW2 lasted six years and one week using the actual invasion of Poland as the start date September one, until the surrender of Japan September 8th 1945.
When the overt aggression began with German reoccupation of the Rhineland March 1936, Anschluss with Austria March 1938 and the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia in September 1938 after The powers without reference to the Czechs handed it over in the great appeasement that only encouraged the Nazis. They took the rest of Czechoslovakia in March 1939 and still the world prevaricated until the following September when Poland was violated first by Germany on September one and Russia took her “Share” under the small print of the Molotov Ribbentrop “treaty” 16 days later, when Poland was cancelled.
So wars do not suddenly happen they begin with skirmishing and appeasement, occur with Nations failing to put out a fire until it is too big to stop.
Having lived through all but two years of my life without such slaughter I fear there is a conflict coming that could place the killing in a category never seen before and the great fears that occupied so much of international thinking until Reagan and Thatcher convinced Gorbachev there may well be a better way.
Not only great music, peace and entertainment in relatively peaceful times it can come crashing down if a fuse is ignited whether by design or accident, it will matter little as there may be only cockroaches, viruses and bacteria to begin again.
“MAD”, Mutual Assured Destruction may have been what prevented armageddon until now , but to a “Putin” and/or a “Mad Mullah” such sentimental logic may not trigger such concerns, as it is obvious that deaths are somewhat minor irrelevancies in their enfeebled brains. As Stalin may or maybe not famously claimed, “A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths are a statistic,” actually suggests the forgetting bit may coming down the line?
Winston Peters made a very short statement acknowledging the day at the start of Question Time and specifically mentioned VE Day
No one else spoke in response so it was very brief and very low key.
VE day is commemorated in Russia.
