It will matter little as unless an “Anderton Seismic Event” occurs in Canberra, at 63 it is a stretch to consider Sussan Ley (pronounced “Lee” not “Lay”)to become the first Liberal Party Federal Prime Minister.
With around half the seats at stake in a FPP electorate only system required, albeit with a preferential vote system and beginning with less than one third at present held following the landslide decision of the electorate to hand Labor another three years, Ms Ley will be in all likelihood an interim leader.
Similar for the defeated Angus Taylor but the first task for the decimated Liberal Party is to reestablish a degree of electability, a task made immeasurably easier with the factionalised cabinet selection forced on Airbus Albo aka Anthony Albanese, now facing managing a mid ninety party in the 151 seat house of reps.
Three loose wheels in Clare O’Neil, Andrew Giles and toxic dwarf Chris Bowen retained and two possibly better performed even though casualties under the horse trading by the Party Faction selection of Cabinet in Ed Husic and Mark Dreyfus resulting from the enforced Cabinet reshuffle a potential source of conflict remains.
Toss in a man with clear delusions he is a future Prime Minister, disciple of the great Wayne Swann who managed the finances under Rudd/Gillard/Rudd with endless promises of a coming budget surplus never achieved, , “Grimm” Jim Chalmers, there are some crumbs of hope for the now almost third Party status Liberals.
Sussan Ley’s remarkable career inside and outside Canberra gives a shred of hope but it is a formidable Eiger North Face like ascent before her, but one is forced to acknowledge her real background ranging from shearers cook to commercial pilot and a reasonable bunch of three children plus assorted Grands.
Her post election presser as leader was accompanied by a strait delivered sincere thank you to her Mum, Angela Braybrooks, who is in terminal respite care in Albury in the Murray area of NSW and that would be her next stop after a tumultuous week. A mum who Sussan wondered if she could ever speak with again after her last visit.
