Some retard has stolen an AED ((Automatic External Defibrillator) from a shopping area on the North Shore.
A slightly special defib in that it was donated by the late John Mayhew, ex All Blacks Doctor, after he having suffered and recovered from a cardiac incident at a Gym, prior to him dying from a subsequent attack.
Mayhew well understood the value in what an AED can deliver as an all to briefly successful saved victim. When John was rendered unconscious a fellow Gym attendee began CPR while another sought a device and after a spell in recovery, John was deemed a survivor but alas another incident struck him down beyond recovery.
Now it is rather puzzling as to who might have stooped so low to steal the device likely valued at around NZ$3000. Those one might see in public have a limited shelf life as they are Battery powered to deliver the shock that stills an erratic heart and if possible the body restarts the Muscle Pump hopefully to a stable rhythm. Such devices need regular service checks for the Pads and leads at around two yearly intervals and the device shelf life will be somewhere between five and eight years.
Probably a moronic low life who has zero understanding of either the unlikely possibility of any value to be recovered and the rather disturbing outcome if a need could not deliver the real possibility for a life saved.
One study I am aware of suggests survival from a cardiac event at 7% with no intervention rising to 9% with CPR only but then a jump to almost 40% with use of an AED. The modern machine needs little training if basic intelligence, ability to listen and understand, and accompanied by simple effective CPR. while the AED is located and brought to use. There is no excuse for every person not to have knowledge and understanding of effective CPR. an only limitation being the physical demands for effective delivery, such treatment is bloody hard work. For many efficiency begins to fall off after two minutes leading to a recommendation of relay delivery if others are available and for those of sufficient years The Brothers Gibb delivered the best rhythm with ironically “Staying Alive”
I am guessing the stolen device is now abandoned and it will be problematic that the Perpetrator actually understands what they did in reality with their stupidity.
