The Party masquerading as the current manifestation of the Party formed in response to Micky Savage’s Labour Mob in the 1930s by combining Reform and United sharing the center right of the Political landscape, has and continues to dilute the founding principles of the originals under Adam Hamilton who never led National to victory over the Socialists, that honour finally fell to Sydney Holland in 1949,
Holland came close three years earlier but was denied a hung parliament by the 4 Race based Maori seats.
It is increasingly difficult to research the foundation declaration from that significant party merger that by 1949 had centered on opposing the increasing moves by the NZLP to bring socialism to underpin the New Zealand Economy.
The National Party, founded in 1936, initially championed principles of individual freedom, self-reliance, and a small government approach. These included free enterprise, individual responsibility, and the belief in a mixed economy with both private and public enterprise. The party also emphasized national loyalty, loyalty to the Sovereign, and the recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Key Principles of the National Party (1936):
- Individual Freedom and Responsibility:The party advocated for personal liberty and the importance of individual initiative and effort.
- Free Enterprise and Competition:They supported the growth of private businesses and encouraged healthy competition in the marketplace.
- Limited Government:The National Party favored a smaller government role in the economy, believing in less intervention and more self-reliance.
- National Loyalty and the Crown:The party emphasized loyalty to New Zealand, its democratic principles, and the Sovereign as Head of State.
- Recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi:The party acknowledged the Treaty as a foundational document for New Zealand.
NB no references to principles or partnership.
A Photo I am unable to include has Leaders of Reform, Forbes and United, Coates plus Holyoake and Syd Holland included in an all male bunch plus one of the true Maori Leaders of all time Sir Apirana Ngata.
I do sincerely wonder if Mr Luxon has ever “researched” those foundations of the Party he chose to assist in raising himself to Prime Minister, much more likely he is more conversant with the origins of the Party of Savage, Semple, Frazer, Lee, who ushered in the wonders of Welfare of the time without the option to sit on a couch with a device.
What triggered this Post;
Well the Coalition Government has an assessment that the New Zealand public cannot be exposed to two Israeli MPs as they will be endangered to a degree that our beloved Leaders cannot allow.
The two; Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir are far too dangerous but any maniac Islamist Preacher is of no such equal peril, apparently.
Following in the enlightened footsteps of “That Woman” with her outstanding empathy and kindness delivering all from the corruption inherent in the murderous swine she, through her meddling with the Fire Arms laws, enabled to come to this country, gain residency, and legal consent to purchase weapons and ammunition to slaughter worshippers at two venues numbering a total in excess of fifty souls, by making it illegal to peruse that Australian’s “Manifesto”.
You see all must be precluded from exposure to such dastardly witterings, for our own wellbeing of course.
They really do think they do know best?
Oh man, those inconvenient principles of the National Party!
I once wrote to Judith Collins, somewhere in the mid to late noughties, about what she was doing in support of these, and she replied that they were outdated, and blocked me. I’ve had zero respect for her ever since.
The Kiwiblog commentator known only as “Redbaiter” used to post those “Principles of The National Party” in order to point out where they’d failed on each one.
However, I pointed out to him that in order to win in 1949 Syd Holland had pretty much thrown them out even then, accepting the welfare state and nationalised industries created by Labour, setting the scene for the next three decades of managing them.
I often wonder how many Lefties came to regret their vote in 1984, understanding now that allowing the hated Mulddon to remain in power meant stuffing the Rogernomics revolution?
I’m a fan of irony,
BTW, some smartass a couple of decades ago said that the only principle the National Party had was keeping Labour out of power, which is a pretty accurate summation.
