It would seem that settles it. Simon Watts and the IRD tried to be clever in covering their tracks. They actually did want this and failed only because they got caught out by Fed Farmers and the TPU. As Jordan Williams says:
A) Watts could have simply ticked the box telling the IRD that this is not on, which he should have if he’s competent and didn’t want such an FBT.
B) The IRD went rogue on the Minister, which means IRD heads roll.
Since there’s no sign of the latter we have to assume A), which tracks with Watts’ attitude on Net Zero and such.
Simon Watts must be fired by Luxon, because no farmer nor most of the rural population who depend on farming one way or another, will ever trust him again on any issue.
I was thinking of that too as I wrote this, because farmers are more exposed to local government than most.
I must admit that when you first raised this issue I thought there had to be some type of mistake because there was no way that a minister in a National government could be so incredibly stupid as to propose this.
I mean I can imagine the tax department policy wonks coming up with an idea like it because they love to tax us, but for this to be proposed by Watts …
Perhaps he needs to look at what political party he belongs to. The Greens might suit him better.
Nick there were a couple of time I thought I had made a big mistake in being so quick off the mark on this. I had the first post up within about 30mins of the time of the NZTU email I got.
Thankfully the NZTU always have good information and they did not let me down.
You are right about Watts – will Luxon sack him because he has two strikes now?
1) Just the policy idea was insane for the National party 2) He appeared to be doing it behind everyone’s back
This is where Luxon is so weak though (and so was Jacinda Ardern). No matter what you thought of them, both Helen Clark and John Key would have been ruthless in terms of dealing with this type of stupidity.

Tom the thing is – I reckon Watts is even worse as Local Government Minister.
He appears to be totally under the control of LGNZ.

He bloody should and for a couple of reasons
1) Just the policy idea was insane for the National party
2) He appeared to be doing it behind everyone’s back

Ardern, Hipkins, Luxon … they’re all wimps
