Those traffic cameras have just arrived in Britain and I expect they’ll be here in NZ soon enough:

The new and advanced ‘ultra’ speed camera called the Jenoptik VECTOR-SR works differently from our usual speed cameras. The VECTOR-SR operates without flashing, which means you won’t know if you’ve been detected or not. They can now look inside vehicles, meaning they can catch you for more than just speeding….These cameras will snap motorists who aren’t wearing a seatbelt and motorists using a mobile phone at the wheel.

Fabulous! See also fiddling with the audio system and the AC controls. Think how useful these would have been to the Authorities during the Great Chinese Lung Rot Pandemic.

The new two-way camera can catch speeding drivers in both directions and can also capture drivers in up to three lanes. The camera employs video-based technology and an intelligent virtual grid to assess speeding.

I did laugh at this bit of information about them, hence the title of the post.

The camera is the latest in ‘spot camera’ technology from German manufacturer Jenoptik Traffic Solutions.

Jawohl Herr Oberstleutnant.

I guess we did lose the Cold War after all.
