While the person pretending to be the Finance Minister is rampaging about seeking illustration she is Doing Something, Fuel Banking, and currently Groceries, in particular Butter, she is compounding the theory voters are inherently stupid.
Well news breaking Ms Willis: there are still some who see your virtual signaling as indicative of your simple intellect. For all that is holy, far too many know you were once a functionary of the major Butter Producer in the nation, Fonterra.
Let us dissect a little of the hubris involved while a little of the credibility remains, if any does.
(1) fuel, yes I know this was a major for fatty who wanted us to believe pumping water uphill with a nonexistent ‘lectric surplus made economic sense, but the price of fuels are Internationally settled unless one is content to deal off label and buy from say Mr Putin?, There are more than enough independent suppliers, to wit: Waitomo, Nelson Petroleum and Mckeowns, all who I understand buy fuel from either Mobil or Caltex and consistently under cut the majors in pricing?
(2) Banking: the very thing I and most economic literates value far higher, a solid Banking system, than watching helplessly while little people lose their shirts with Bank closures.
(3) Groceries.Nationally as we are no larger a market than Melbourne or Sydney yet there are morons who believe another Grocer will come to the party and watch the reality of losses and bankruptcies. Although suffering an attack of considerable proportions from the Student Government during the “Pandemic”, a rogue influenza that had a potential to accelerate death rates of the weakened and elderly, the economic midgets set about closing all and every small business operation leaving the Duopoly to flourish unfettered.
How many small operations of fish mongers, butcheries, green grocers and others, were interrupted in various degrees by the stupidity and no longer exist. I have personally sought out a Battery Town and a Fishmonger in the last week only to encounter a locked yard for the first and a new Butchery replacing the second.
Some stupids remain who really do think canny bastards such as Aldi, will flock ashore with shareholders dosh and take on Woolworths Au or the Locally owned cooperatives of Foodstuffs. Utter BS, if that was economically possible they would be here already.
Meanwhile in the actual economic world Joe and Josephine Average inhabit, Rates, Taxes, Levies and other monopolistic impositions backed by legislative powers both central and local continue to rise at multiples of inflation, wilfully unrestrained
Two massive wasting of precious resources remain with total support of almost every politician,
Climate Change and racial divisions, why those currently in positions of power and influence will not see wood for trees and stand up, simple really they are cowed into compliance.
Distraction and obfuscation, stock and trade for politicians!
Rates capping would fall into that category. That the easy road to take. Why not work with local bodies instead of legislating?
Don’t get me started on Climate Change!!!
he cost of living is totally caused by over regulation and taxation. Studies show that the best standard of living is when total state tax is around 10% of GDP. The study done in NZ by a small team from the IRD and headed by Patrick Caragata, found that if total state takings rose above 20% of GDP the economy it would wreck the economy. 80 something years ago the total was 17%, it is now 43% and in the same time frame our per capita incomes have gone from 3rd to 38th in the world. Blaming the price of things causing the problem is typical of politicians to distract us from the real problem. We will never be a wealthy country again while we have this problem.
