Ozzy Osbourne, one of the most influential musical artists of the Twentieth Century, has had his final day. He was 76 years old.
While he didn’t personally invent Heavy Metal, he was the first Heavy Metal singer in the first proper Heavy Metal band, Black Sabbath. If you’ve never listened to Black Sabbath, you should! War Pigs is one of the finest rock and roll songs ever performed. And Ozzy had one of the most diabolically beautifully-toned voices of any rock singer, that transcended many of the dark and morbid subject matters of the lyrics. He sang amazing songs like War Pigs, Iron Man, After Forever, Into the Void, Supernaut, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Killing Yourself to Live, Symptom of the Universe, and Juniors Eyes.
Black Sabbath created history in the ’70s, and then Ozzy did it all again as a solo artist in the ’80s with songs like Crazy Train, Bark at the Moon, and Flying High Again. He was deservedly known as the Godfather of Heavy Metal ever after. And while he did other groundbreaking things (Ozzfest, reality TV), it is for his contribution to popular music which he should deservedly be known.
His death is a dreadful loss to music, entertainment, and the world, and to me as a fan. May God grant him rest, and allow him to escape the eternal damnation he sang so frequently about!
Many thanks to Tom and the other NM authors for allowing me to contribute to the site. I am looking forward to doing some more blogging!
Welcome aboard and glad you’ve joined, with your first post being a bit of a shock.
I knew he was getting up there in age and had Parkinsons but his death still comes as a surprise.
Still, we better get used to it as actuarial analysis tells that lot of the 70’s and even 80’s stars are going to be karking it soon
