After five terms as James Patrick Anderton’s successor, former Green, Alliance for four years, followed her predecessor Anderton. to the Progressives (an oxymoron to be sure) perennial trougher Megan Woods (who ate all the pies) took over his seat of Wigram with varying results;
2011 GE garnered 14 080 (45%)
2014. 14 519 (49%)
2017. 17 001. (52%)
2020. 24 286 (62%)
2023 Opps 14 411 (41%) Nats Tracy Summerfield 14 411 (38%)
Her opponent in the big win of 2020 was now Fendalton MP Hamish Campbell.
This old cynic will always link her to the utterly idiotic scheme to use never eventuating “Surplus Electricity” to pump water from the Clutha River up into an existing shallow Lake Onslow from where it could generate less energy than it took to pump the water up hill, in a drought.
Now I have seen a few “drys”, five on the trot at Waipara c1970/75, and they do often come in “clumps”, a simple fact that escaped Pie Eater Extraordinaire Megs in that her stored water at Onslow would be exhausted in a few days. Water that had not evaporated in the Central Otago hot summers in the meantime, creating a dust storm when the Westerly continued to blow as it surely would until the water could be replaced with more power, never in surplus. A hair brained scheme that may have had a place much nearer threatened consumers and underpinned by an acceptance of Nuclear that can genuinely create such a surplus in generation capacity.
Just one more useless ignorant socialist embedded with OPMs in a vision of utopia, flying in the face Of Baroness Margaret Thatcher’s notable meme: “socialism will only last so long as other peoples money exists to sustain it.”
Her name, if recalled anywhere, will sit alongside that of Ardern, Robertson, Hipkins, Clark D, Davis K, Sepeloni, Little, Parker, Mahuta, Poto Williams, O’Connor, Tinetti, Jackson, and Wood (Brylcreem), in the cabal of destruction as the very worst administration to ever control the treasury benches of New Zealand.
It is surely “Megan Who” already.
and her ‘ban oil and gas exploration’ brainfart. Aided and abetted by the other ‘her’.
`Megan Woods (who ate all the pies)’
Known as miss piggy in our house since before the 2017 Election thanks to mrspdm.
Woods claimed the five terawatt storage capacity of Onslow would solve the country’s energy-storage issues for the long-term, smooth out consumer power prices and allow fossil-fuel-generated power to become a thing of the past, according to the first stage of the feasibility studies. Yeah right!
Just over $20 million was spent investigating the Onslow option as part of the Labour Government’s wider NZ Battery Project study.
The National Party’s energy spokesperson at the time, Stuart Smith, said it will be too late to prevent the lights going out – possibly permanently for some businesses – if the country banks on the massive Lake Onslow pumped-hydro project to solve energy shortages.
Yep, another great idea from Megan!
The first time I heard her speak as Energy Minister, just after she got the job, she made it clear she had no idea. I heard her speak again not long before Labour lost. She got much better at delivering speeches that, the questions afterwards showed, she still had no clue about.
