An interesting piece in Point of Order today. https://pointofordernz.wordpress.com/2025/08/06/bureaucratic-sabotage
It is about the process of consultation with Maori as part of the application for extracting heavy mineral sands from the Taranaki bight.
They initially consulted with “Iwi and the three main iwi groups in south Taranaki”.
They were “rebuffed”.
They tried again and this time consulted with twelve Maori groups.
“They had no response” (?)
However, bureaucracy invited thirty-six Maori groups to the applicants latest conference.
The Act requires the applicant to pay $10,000 to each Maori group attending.
That adds up to $360,000 for Maori to attend a conference where I suspect many of them are not affected by the outcome.
The PoO outcome continues with other examples of bureaucratic obstruction saying ” the performative Maorification of all things bureaucratic has created a waste behemoth”.
Wasn’t Luxon going to get rid of wasteful spending ?
Worth a look.
All hui no doee. Caterers would have done well though.
Luxon is stretching himself to the max with the foreshore and seabed changes.
There is no way he will take on another bunch of Maori at the same time.
Remember he says that The Treaty is a Partnership and is very timid when saying Maori ceded Sovereignty.
