This year, Canterbury, frostier by some margin has demonstrated a manifestation of too cold to snow theory that remains dominant for much of the South Island ski area, and sometimes challenged Mt Dobson, NW of Fairley is this year a more favoured field, while Porter Heights and The Craigieburn ranges are still not blessed.

Thredbo near the NSW Victorian border on the other hand is enjoying living memory snow cover.
