THIS COULD BE A REAL PROBLEM FOR THE GOVERNMENT

with 7 comments

Following on from yesterday’s post where I took issue with Hendly’s modelling (seemingly endorsed by government) which postulated up to 7,000 deaths per annum from Covid with 80% of the 5 YO+ population fully vaccinated reducing to 50 deaths were the vaccination rate to reach 90% and it’s clear that the slow vaccination rate among Maori is developing as a real issue. Associate Health Minister, Peni Henare, has endorsed that concern.

I’m aware that Wayne Mapp with his family links into Maoridom shares that concern and it would perhaps be helpful if he were able to expand further on that. Suffice to say that, as I understand it, there is a significant cohort among younger Maori, especially with those who you might class as white collar intellectuals, who are dismissive of vaccination as just another manifestation of colonial oppression however defined.

So, consider this … what would happen if the rest of the population reached the 90% goal while Maori only managed say 70%. Would that cause the government to delay any move to the ‘new normal’ whatever the new normal is to be? The noises coming out of the POT (like that descriptive) suggests that would indeed be the case.

How then would the rest of New Zealand react? … one suspects this would not play out well on a number of fronts in which case it could end up being a real problem for Ardern’s mob.

Double Standards & Changing Narratives

with 6 comments

Just another in an endless list of examples of how the narratives change depending on who is in power and what objectives they’re pursuing.

The focus here being on Australia, which continues its descent into Stasi-world.

Let’s start with stuff in New South Wales, whose State government I have been assured is a “Liberal” one with more of a “hands-off” policy than all those nasty socialists…

… followed by the real McCoy in Socialist Victoria.

Plus a bit of phone app tracking of you in South Australia where you get 15 minutes to prove to the government that you are where you say you are.

Culminating in scenes like this – because even after two burly cops have smashed a 70 year old woman to the ground and broken her hip you still need to pepper spray the fuck out of her. Just to be safe. She might have Covid-19.

It’s entirely predictable where the MSM will sit on this issue. As this compare and contrast does of the Guardian’s approach to two similar events with different bad guys.

Flashback: how “Public Health advocates” felt about protests during lockdowns in 2020 America (same here in NZ incidentally)

Thus, you can guarantee which photo the likes of The Guardian would support below.

It’s almost time to start playing that game Papers Please to get into shape for the questions.

Having had numerous people in the US talking about denying healthcare to unvaccinated folk, don’t be surprised if it also becomes more than talk.

Finally, a timetable for comparison. Readers can pick where New Zealand sits on this chart – and where we’re headed over time.

COULD THIS BE THE BEGINNING OF THE END?

with 17 comments

The government has released a report prepared for them by a Shane Hendly which has it that New Zealand could see up to 7,000 deaths per annum from Covid even with 80% of the 5+ population (75% of the entire population) fully vaccinated unless there are additional measures put in place … read further restrictions on business, the size of gatherings and the ability to travel internally.

Up until now there has been a general consensus between all parties in Parliament in relation to our Covid response with the only differences being around the fringes. This report which clearly has the endorsement of government (why would you release it otherwise) could well be the straw that breaks the camels back.

Does the government really think we are so believing of everything we hear from the oracle of truth; so thick that we are incapable of distilling truth from fiction? If they do then they may just get their true comeuppance. There is a limit as to how far you can push people.

Consider this … 18 months into Covid 19 including six weeks with the Delta variant present in the community and with the country at the tail end of developed countries with its vaccination rollout we have experienced a total of just twenty seven, repeat 27, Covid related deaths.

And the government expects us to believe a report that has it that even with the vaccination rollout at 75% we could see up to 7,000 deaths per annum reducing to 50 were the vaccination level to reach 85% and provided always additional restrictive measures remained in place.

Reality vs modelling that at best is suspect and at worst reflects the instincts of a socialist government to manage the daily life of the country their way with freedom a dirty word.

New Zealand … the way you’ve got it. Wake up sheeple.

POOR MELBOURNE

with 17 comments

If you thought Auckland was doing it tough after a month at Level 4 then spare a thought for the many Melbournians who have been forceably incarcerated in their homes for close to 300 days per courtesy of a heavy handed, control-freak, socialist government. And while you can fairly deplore the actions of the protesters in Melbourne you can perhaps understand their frustration over the vaccine mandate being implemented by Premier Andrews … a mandate that will see construction workers, tradies, teachers and support staff, barred from working unless they are fully vaccinated.

And don’t you just luv the ‘collective punishment’ bit that saw Andrews shut down the entire construction industry (300,000 workers) over the action of 500 or so CFME unionists who vented their displeasure over the vaccine mandate outside the CFME Union Office in central Melbourne although I must admit to a certain wry smile … the CFME Union is the praetorian guard of the Labor left faction that holds sway in Victorian State Labor politics.

And don’t think it can’t happen in NZL. Trevor Mallard is already making noises about barring people from Parliament if they’re not vaccinated. Think about that and reflect. Sure you can argue its their own choice and they make that decision knowing the consequences of their decision … but Parliament … the House of the People????? That’s a step too far.

Be very clear. I’m pro-vaccination as a way forward to ‘normality’ however defined. But I respect absolutely the right of the small number of people who make an informed choice not to be vaccinated. In a free society there are limits on the meme of ‘the greatest good for the greatest number’. Mandatory vaccination and you’re no longer living in a free society. You can fairly ask what’s the next step … compulsory euthanasia for the terminally ill on the basis that the heath dollar could be better spent elsewhere. Nah, if you believe in a free society there are some things worth fighting for and the vaccine mandate ain’t one of those things.

The Hunger Masks

with 14 comments

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and . . . then retreated back into their money . . . and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

I don’t know how many of our readers are aware of a famous and very successful series of books and movies from the last decade called The Hunger Games.

They’re SF stories set in a dystopian future where glittering technology exists in a feudal society. In fact that technology enables it. For the purposes of this post the following is a key plotline:

[The Hunger Games] universe is a dystopia set in Panem, a North American country consisting of the wealthy Capitol and 13 districts in varying states of poverty. Every year, children from the first 12 districts are selected via lottery to participate in a compulsory televised battle royale death match called The Hunger Games.

Capitol citizens are extremely wealthy and life moves very slowly until the Games,… Many Capitol residents are extremely shallow, always looking for ways to be noticed. An outrageous sense of style and fashion are very important to the citizens of the Capitol… Capitol citizens are noted to have quite high ranking and integral roles and occupations for Panem as a whole…

You get the picture.

While not quite as gaudy as those characters, the following is a great example of how the same attitudes are rampant among our rulers nowadays, as San Francisco Mayor London Breed, had fun the other day in a San Francisco nightclub. I guess she’s read some of these counter-narrative articles on masks.

What she’s actually doing in that video is announcing the new law that you do not have to wear a mask if:

  1.  You are “having a good time,”
  2. “Feeling the spirit,”
  3. Watching the reunion of a band you like.

BTW, she insists that the reunion of the jazz band, Tony Toni Tone, is the story here, and not her defying her own mask mandate. I especially loved this quote:

“We don’t need the fun police to come in and micromanage and tell us what we should or shouldn’t be doing,” she said during an interview, contending she was drinking at the time and started dancing because she was “feeling the spirit” and “wasn’t thinking about a mask,” according to reports.

The irony in that statement is so fucking thick you could cut it with a knife.

Perhaps SF citizens should keep that in mind if an actual cop (very much not “fun”) or some other asshole hassles them about wearing a mask. Maybe print out her interview answers on a card to show cops that the law has been repealed by the mayor herself.

This is nothing new of course, for in the past year the following has occurred:

California Governor Newsom at a lovely dinner with other unmasked rich people at one of the world’s most expensive restaurants, the French Laundry. The staff are masked of course, per order of the Governor.

Barack Obama’s 60th birthday unmasked bash with his celebrity friends at their home in Martha’s Vineyard. The servants wore masks.

Obama’s Party

Nancy Pelosi’s fundraiser in the expensive vine yards of California. The servants wore masks.

And of course, the Met Ball a few days ago.

These people either don’t believe their own bullshit about masks (and other things) or they’re glorying in applying those rules to little people who can’t fight back, at least not without ending up in jail.

Or perhaps what we Untermenchen should take from all these events is that they’re just deliberately rubbing our noses in this shit. That the whole point is to make it clear who the boss is: that the rules apply to us, not them, and they want us to know it.

We are ruled by terrible, unkind, incompetent, uncaring people. I’m tempted to say that they are evil people, not out of deliberation but shallow callousness.

While I don’t take a lot of notice of what’s happening in New Zealand there are some stories that are just so great they spread like wildfire – even as far as my rellies in Chicago, who wet themselves laughing at what our “gangs” get up to.

And thus:

Two people have been arrested after allegedly trying to cross the border into Auckland with $100,000 in cash and a “boot full” of KFC.

If I had told anyone a few years ago that at some point in the near future the New Zealand police would be chasing gang cars full of illegally transported Kentucky Fried Chicken around country roads you’d have just laughed and said it’s a great plot line for Hot Fuzz II.

Yeah, there was a $100k in cash as well and I’d bet that the Bros were bringing that up from their Waikato drug deals when their cuzzies told them that they might as well fill up on KFC as well.

Xinese Xi Snot Graphing

with 2 comments

It’s been a while since I looked at the progress around the world against Xi Jinping’s bastard child experiment.

Here’s a comparison I’ve not seen before: Israel vs Sweden.

South Korea with yet another demonstration of how masks don’t work against this virus and never have.

Comparisons within the USA.

Here’s a fun one. Try to guess which state out of these two had the tougher policies on social distancing, lockdowns, masks, vaccinations and other policies over the past eighteen months.

Getting away from all those messy continental borders that can’t be completely sealed, here’s the good old island state of Hawaii again, from just over a month ago.

Obviously all these measures need to be tested to destruction.

Minaj à trois

with 3 comments

There’s definitely a lot of weird shit going on at the moment around the world.

None weirder than Chinese Xi Snot’s effect on otherwise seemingly normal people, turning them into frightened, fearful souls who have become toxic to friends and family and wear masks on a beach and in parks.

With politicians it’s been quite the opposite: power mad control freaks doesn’t even begin to cover them, almost without exception.

So it should not be a surprise to see pushback coming from unexpected places. Weird places – like Nicki Minaj.

You don’t know who she is? Of course you don’t. Few people over the age of 30 would:

Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty (born December 8, 1982), known professionally as Nicki Minaj, is a Trinidadian-born rapper, singer, and songwriter. She is known for her animated flow in her rapping and versatility as a recording artist.

Minaj is one of the best selling female artists of all time with 100 million records sold worldwide. Her numerous accolades include eight American Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, twelve BET Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, a Brit Award, and a Guinness World RecordBillboard ranked her the top female rapper of the 2010s, as well as ranking her seventh among the top female artists of the decade.

Nicki Minaj

She also has 22 million followers on Twitter and 175 million on Instagram. In other words she’s a very big deal in terms of youth culture. Like other celebrities she talks a lot of shit because attention is like oxygen for these people, while also feeding their vast incomes, which in turn pushes them to being even crazier.

This includes giving health advice, as actress Gwyneth Paltrow has done for years, while also selling vagina-scented candles.

Her vagina to be specific.

You therefore probably don’t want to know about Sandra Bullock’s penis facialswhere Josh Brolin got sunburned, or what’s in the Kardashians’ smoothies. But rest assured that Demi Moore only uses “highly trained medical leeches.

In particular the anti-vaccine movement has been powered for years before now by the likes of Jenny McCarthy, Jim Carrey, Robert Kennedy Jr. and other anti-vaccine activists who were given a welcome platform by Oprah Winfrey, The View (beloved by the Jacinda demographic of women viewers in their 50’s) and other MSM places.

But all of this has usually been treated as an eye-rolling joke by both the Left and the Right, as well as by the government, even when it came to Public Health Care. The attitude was that there will always be a fringe, but they’re not going to have an effect, even with masses of followers.

Until now. The shit storm stated with this Tweet from Minaj.

While I’m no medical expert I really can’t see how an mRNA vaccine would make your testicles swell up as well as causing impotence. But as I said, this is just the usual celebrity bullshit.

The immediate pushback came from fellow media personalities, though nobody with Minaj’s number of followers. There were critical pieces about her at CNNVoxCNBC, the BBC, the American late-night comics made her the butt of their jokes. But it was MSNBC’s Joy Reid, who did a whole segment denouncing Minaj, that really got things going:

Joy Reid

“You have a platform, sister, that is 22 million followers, okay. I have two million followers. You have 22 million followers on Twitter. For you to use your platform to encourage our community to not protect themselves and save their lives, my God, sister, you could do better than that.”

Minaj did not back down. She called Reid a “lying homophobic coon” (Reid has history) and an “Uncle Tomiana”, among other things.

Minaj also revealed that she’s not vaxxed…

The Met was the fancy NYC ball party I posted on the other day, where Lefty hypocrites of all stripes gathered.

So things escalated further. Saint Anthony Fauci felt the need to go on national TV to talk this down. The awesome power of the USA Today and PolitiFact “fact checkers” went into action. Even the Whitehouse reached out, offering a doctor with expertise (not Fauci I presume).

This reaction was beyond belief considering how such people have been ignored by TPTB in the past. But things went even crazier when Tucker Carlson, the Great White Hated of the US Left, covered the story and made the following point :

“The part where she says you should pray on it. Make the decision yourself, like a free human being and “don’t be bullied”. So our media and public health officials didn’t like this because they make their livings bullying people. So they couldn’t let it stand.”

And then she Tweeted out that clip.

MELTDOWN. There was the usual Leftie Tweet Mass Attack that a reference to Carlson invites. But Minaj hit back at those too (in keeping with the rap/hip hop ethos, she fights).

If you’ve wondered why Trump’s 2020 vote share rose among Blacks and Hispanics, this is yet another example.

Minaj has crossed a line that public-health experts, the MSM, and many politicians are enforcing hard around the world. She committed a sin they cannot ignore or forgive, which is to defy them on this issue. It’s been quite a thing watching the spectacle of the entire US medical, MSM, Entertainment (in particular since she’s one of them) and political establishments bringing all of their weight to bear upon her.

That’s because they’re increasingly desperate, so every claim, no matter how spectacularly outlandish and no matter the source, must be policed by our public-health-disinformation watchers, because those gullible masses could be swayed by any blasphemy.

The thing is that’s not going to work. All of these establishment health experts and MSM fact-checkers are putting enormous effort into an attempt to persuade the kinds of people who instinctively reject the recommendations of establishment health experts and barely pay any attention to the MSM.

Beyond such sober reactions, the furious and widespread denunciation and mockery of Minaj will also not have the effect the medical, media, entertainment and political establishments think it will. It may even backfire.

Nicki Minaj is not going to be “canceled.” She’s already fabulously wealthy – she’s worth between $80-100 million – so doesn’t need money. Her fan base of tens of millions, possibly hundreds of millions, isn’t going to abandon her if she maintains a vaccine-sceptical position. She utterly rejects the moral authority of her critics and defiance of what other people think is her brand.

They need to pick another target to crush. Ordinary people should do and judging from results to date, the proles may even like it and want it.

Die MSM, Die – A Public Service to National

with 8 comments

Readers will be well aware that I have very little time for the National party nowadays, having voted for them for about twenty years.

However, I have some sympathy for their struggles with a bought-and-paid-for MSM in New Zealand, which apparently extends to an endless character assassination campaign by cartoonists on the National leader, Judith Collins. I don’t have much time for her either but if those cartoonists had any sense of decency they’d hurl at least a few scathing caricatures at Jacinda Adern. God knows there’s enough material.

However the latest piece of news on this front is a new low, with National MP Chris Bishop:

Here is an opinion piece which I pitched to Stuff and the NZ Herald. Neither decided it was worth publishing. At a time when the PM commands the airwaves on a daily basis at 1pm, it’s important for the National Opposition voice to be heard and for constructive criticism of the government.

Ok. Fuck the MSM and their bullshit bias. If Social media, and especially blogs, are still to mean anything in this environment I think we owe it to readers to publish his piece, How Did We Get Here:

Lockdowns are incredibly expensive: it has been estimated a countrywide Level 4 lockdown costs the economy around $1.5 billion per week. That’s before you count the social cost: kids not at school, families split apart, the mental health impacts of being cooped up at home for days on end. I think almost everyone thinks we should be doing all we can to avoid them.

Sadly, it’s become clear in the government’s response to the recent delta outbreak that while Kiwis have done all they’ve been asked to do – the government hasn’t been playing its part. The “team of five million” has been let down.

Two things have become clear. First, we had no alternative but to lockdown because of our woefully low vaccination rates. Second, despite claims to the contrary, the government had done very little planning at all around how to respond to a further outbreak, particularly of delta, since the first COVID lockdown last year.

It gives me no pleasure as the Opposition spokesperson for COVID-19 to say that New Zealand’s vaccination rates, by world standards, are hopeless. For most of this year we had the world’s slowest vaccine roll-out. Chris Hipkins said at the end of 2020 we would be “at the front of the queue” but the reality is we are at the back of the pack. This is not the “year of the vaccine” we were promised by the Prime Minister.

The vaccines are safe, they work, and the data is very clear: the higher our vaccination rates, the less need there is of lockdowns. Every single person that goes and gets vaccinated brings us closer to freedom: freedom from lockdowns, and freedom to travel. That’s why the government’s ineptitude over vaccine supply matters. The government simply failed in its most important job: to get a supply of vaccines as early as possible and make sure as many people were vaccinated as possible as early as possible.

The government’s incompetence is astonishing. We were one of the last developed countries to sign contracts with vaccine manufacturers in 2020. We were then slow to approve the Pfizer vaccine. Hundreds of millions of jabs had been given by the time we approved it. We were then slow to actually order our doses, not doing it until January 29 this year. And we didn’t even bother to ask Pfizer if we could pay more to get earlier delivery of the vaccines, as other countries did. Compare the cost of paying a bit more to the cost of lockdowns, and do the maths. It’s a no brainer.

Incredibly, the government has claimed at various points it would be “unethical” or immoral to have a faster vaccine roll-out, because other countries need the vaccines more than we do. Leaving aside the internal inconsistency in this argument (other countries need them now too, but you don’t see the government giving ours up do you?), the New Zealand government’s first responsibility is to the people of New Zealand – and that means rolling out the vaccine as quick as they could. They failed.

The second failure by the government is their failure to plan for delta. The Prime Minister claimed on television this morning that delta only emerged in MIQ in June. That is completely incorrect. The first case of delta turned up in early April in MIQ and it has been raging across the world for most of this year. The government has sat ensconced behind the barriers of Fortress New Zealand and smugly looked at Australia, but they weren’t doing the work behind the scenes to prepare for when delta turned up here.

A smart government would have done an audit of all our MIQ facilities in light of delta to make sure infection control practices were up to scratch. Instead, a public walkway was allowed to share the same air as an exercise yard at the Crowne Plaza in Auckland and there was a vaccination centre right next to the Crowne Plaza. COVID positive people are still allowed to exercise in an underground car park in Wellington. Only now is the government reviewing MIQ facilities in light of delta.

A smart government would have had a plan in place for more quarantine facilities beyond the Jet Park. Instead the government had to scramble to get more quarantine facilities going like the Novotel Ellerslie – and then a COVID positive man escaped from it, putting us all at risk. It has taken over 24 hours to move many people from the community into quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19, because the coordination plan between health officials and MIQ wasn’t in place.

Some of our current problems date back to the response to the first outbreak last year. Contract tracing has been an ever-present issue. There have been four expert reviews of contact tracing since April 2020. All have found it wanting but little has been done by the government. In this outbreak, it took six days for the government to second public servants from other departments to start contract tracing. By its own admission the government will fail to meet the contact tracing target metrics designed by Dr Ayesha Verrall, ironically enough now Associate Minister of Health. In this latest outbreak there are still 5000 contacts who have not even had a single phone call from a contact tracer!

A smart government would have had a plan in place around testing. Other countries use saliva tests and rapid antigen tests that return results in 15 minutes. Speed of testing with delta is critical, because the virus moves so far. But the government insists on using expensive and time consuming nasal PCR tests as our main testing technique. The result has been people who are told to get tested waiting 10-12 hours for a test or giving up and going home – or even worse, not even bothering. We should be using saliva testing much more widely – recommended to the government a year ago – as well as rapid antigen tests. Incredibly, these tests are banned in New Zealand.

There’s more I could mention. The failure to use Bluetooth tracing even though we’ve all been told for months to turn it on. The refusal to build purpose-built quarantine. The lack of preparation in our hospitals for a delta outbreak – no new ICU bed spaces have been provisioned over the five months.

The government borrowed $62 billion last year on the COVID Response Fund.  Did they spend this on contact tracing, testing capacity, and extra ICU capacity? That would have been sensible. Instead it was used as a slush fund. Instead the fund was spent on art therapy clinics, cameras on fishing boats, horse racing, public interest journalism, and school lunches. Yes, I’m serious.

Auckland is in lockdown – again – because the government failed to vaccinate quickly enough and the government failed to plan for delta.

I should add the usual blog disclaimer that simply because I have published this piece does not mean that I agree with all of it. In fact it’s the usual National angle of agreeing with what Labor does but with the promise to do it better. Hence the talk of superior control of people with Bluetooth tracing and purpose-built MIQ camps – but with no mention of getting after proven treatments like monoclonal antibodies for people who do catch the virus, presumably because just talking about such treatments might further damage an already slow vaccine rollout.

Just as crazy up the coast

California continues to be the pacesetter for Leftist insanity in the USA, and since most people outside America usually pay attention to New York City and California, likely because of their enormous cultural influence around the world, it’s easy to forget the similar things are happening in other parts of that vast nation.

Oregon is next door to California, facing the Pacific. If anybody thinks of the place at all they think of forests and mist. But a lot of things have been happening there that are better guides to where Democrat rule in the US is leading than in California, which is protected somewhat by its wealth, or NYC and Chicago, Illinois, where thick layers of corruption complicate matters.

Oregon is seeing the results of its Democrat rule come fast and clear.

First up, Antifa have had a free run in the place for a long time now, to a far greater degree than anywhere else in the US. The result has been lots of violence, mostly directed at the police but occasionally at private citizens who got in Antifa’s way. The group has been especially hard on anybody who tries to film their activities, knowing the power of visual propaganda they don’t want it used against them, and also in keeping with their need to not be identified beneath their Black Bloc outfits.

The MSM has largely ignored them, leaving coverage to unaffiliated journalists like Andy Ngo, who has naturally taken the brunt of their online tracking and abuse, as well as physical attacks. But the other day a perfectly normal photographer, Maranie Staab, working for a perfectly normal outfit called “News2Share” (loves Dems, hates the GOP) made the mistake of doing some actual journalism on Antifa

This finally spurred the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) to speak up:

Assaulting journalists runs counter to the ideals of our democracy. SPJ Oregon stands by journalists’ First Amendment right to cover incidents and demonstrations and to provide clear documentation of these events to keep everyone informed.

As Ngo pointed out this is nothing new, having alerted SPJ years ago to this Portland Antifa poster, which they ignored.

The fact is that Official Portland has basically taken Antifa’s side across the board. Police have often failed to intervene when Antifa have attacked other groups – and not just their favourite boogeyman, The Proud Boys – but groups of Christians holding prayer vigils (“Where is your God now”).

Recently they chased a 65 year old man and started shooting at him. He shot back and was arrested. The Antifa shooters were not. Back in 2016, before most people had heard of Antifa, they beat up a reporter named Andy Strickland, who finally pulled a gun which got them to back off. No shots were fired but he was arrested and did 40 days in jail. His attackers were not arrested. Even though he’s been free a long time he continues to pursue the case, since he was ordered by the court to not record Antifa, which seems to me a pretty clear case of infringing his 1st Amendment rights, the thing that SPJ mentioned. As his lawyer said:

[R]ight now if you’re in the black bloc what do you think? I can harass somebody and get them arrested if they try to defend themselves.

And then they want people not to defend themselves so that they feel terrified, so that the[y] feel scared, so that they feel frightened, so that their behavior can be publicly and privately coerced. And that’s the danger. And that’s why this case is bigger than one person.

If this can happen to him here it can happen to anyone, anywhere, and it means that nobody is safe. And that’s why this case is so significant.

The MSM has simply followed along. Reporters “allowed” to cover them must give the group their explicit allegiance. They must be fellow travelers. The arrangement works just fine for Antifa. They loved the fashion spread done by The Washington Post in 2020 with dressed-up black-bloc Antifa members receiving glowing blurbs about how wonderful and virtuous they are. It was a disgusting display of gaslighting.

Antifa were also in the forefront of the Defund The Police effort, and they had some success, with the inevitable results of a massive increase in shootings and murder in Portland, plus a breakdown in the 911 system with callers waiting minutes to get through. The city did finally yield to reality and re-created the special gun-violence unit they had shut down in 2020, only to find that few cops wanted to join it. That’s the cops that remain; many have retired and not been replaced. One detective’s exit interview gave an insight as to why:

“The community shows zero support. The city council are raging idiots, in addition to being stupid. Additionally, the mayor and city council ignore actual facts on crime and policing in favor of radical leftist and anarchists’ fantasy.”

The city was recently sued by the family of Trump supporter, Aaron Danielson, who was stalked and murdered by an Antifa activist who was himself killed days later in a shootout with police trying to arrest him. The lawsuit claims that the death was preventable and was due to the hands-off policy of the city. Normally I would not expect such a lawsuit to win but in the case of Portland they’ve got a strong argument based on what city “leaders” have said and done:

Shortly before the filing of the lawsuit, Mayor Wheeler admitted the “hands-off strategies” for dealing with rioters was “not the right strategy,” Fox News reported.

“It is clear, based on the public outcry, on the media outcry, on the national front, that that strategy was not the right strategy,” the mayor said during a city council meeting last week, according to the Associated Press. “I think we can all acknowledge that. I take full responsibility for it.”

The lawsuit alleges that the police department’s Rapid Response Team, responsible for crowd control during protests and riots, was less than two blocks away from the shooting. The team was given orders to not get involved between dueling demonstrators.

A few months ago, with Trump safely out of office, Wheeler finally spoke out against Antifa:

“My good faith efforts at de-escalation have been met with ongoing violence and even scorn from radical Antifa and anarchists,…It’s time to push back harder against those who are set on destroying our community.”

Too late, idiot.

But he’s in good company. Just the other day the Governor of the state, Kate Brown, announced sweeping new mandates, masks in all indoor and outdoor settings, regardless of vaccination status, plus the now-standard vaccine mandates for paramedics and firefighters. She’s been warned as to what will happen across the state:

Williams also noted that 25% or more of the firefighters in his district would also quit to avoid a vaccine mandate. He said this would devastate the ability of the Aurora Fire Department to respond to emergencies.

In Baker City, the firefighters’ union rep testified to the city council that 100% of the department would resign over the mandate.

“We had nursing staff testify in droves. They will walk. We will not have enough staff locally to handle anything at the hospital. I have heard from two Oregon Department of Forestry offices that they will be gutted. No response crews left for wildfires. And I could go on and on about the rest of the state departments.

But it’s the small cities that are going to be destroyed. Comply with the mandate and lose all of our staff. Spend hundreds of thousands of dollars re-recruiting and training. Let people die. Or don’t comply and spend at least tens of thousands of dollars fighting it in court, and probably losing our city manager and fire chief anyway because they can’t be held personally responsible for fines.
