Ooooops

My Profile

Just a tad surprised to view the commercial from Spark which had a supposed Sir Earnest Rutherford endorsing their new 5G network.

And then at Seven Sharp a piece promoting the new Navy ship HMNZS Aotearoa as a ‘family friendly’ vessel. WTF. Are the RNZAF’s new P8-A Poseiden patrol aircraft to be family friendly too and then what about the new Protected Mobility Vehicles to replace the controversial LAV purchase.

The media have lost the plot on this one.

ON THE RNZRSA

My Profile

I see that the government has decided to grant the Royal New Zealand Returned & Services Association $2.5m from the Covid-19 Recovery Fund.

One hopes that the grant is contingent on the organisation getting its act together. In the recent times we have seen both the Board Chair and the Chief Executive resign after an acrimonious falling out; the powerful Auckland RSA led by its President declare a virtual war on the national body while the Christchurch Memorial RSA remains in real strife amid allegations of serious financial mismanagement.

IMHO the grant should not be used to cover off the operating cost of National Headquarters nor prop up ailing RSAs. The bottom line focus of the organisation, both nationally and locally, should be and must be to provide welfare support to those who have served … and that’s where the dosh should be directed … not empire building or subsidising a mostly broken business model.

JAMIE LEE-ROSS

My Profile

I see that the nice Jamie-Lee-Ross has teamed up with Billy Te Kahika to form a new political party about to be consigned to the dustbin of history.

By any measure it is the coming together of the narcissist and the plain wacky coated in self-delusion.

Ross will have his fate determined both by the Courts where he is to go to trial starting 6 September on charges of electoral fraud and by the electorate two weeks later. One would hope that those considering voting for him will take time out to read https://www.newsroom.co.nz/go-back-into-a-room-with-a-predator-no-thank-you which covers off the investigation by Parliamentary Services (at a cost of $34,000) into allegations of bullying, harassment, and sexual harassment against Ross by members of his parliamentary staff.

Ross is deserving of all he gets and for Billy, well sorry fella, it’s guilt by association.

AND FOR THE SECOND TIME OF ASKING

My Profile

Can I urge the Serious Fraud Office to expedite their investigations into the Labour Party and NZ First for electoral malpractice remembering always that the SFO can only open an investigation where they have serious and credible evidence of possible criminal wrongdoing.

If charges are to be laid it is important that the public should be fully appraised of them before they cast their vote. Equally, and it would be unfair to Labour and NZ First for them to have to go into the campaign with this hanging over their heads unresolved.

Voters have a right to know; Labour and NZ First have a right to know.

IHUMATAO

My Profile

Every few weeks we hear a breathless report by some media worthy with close links to the Beehive that a resolution of the illegal land occupation of privately owned land at Ihumatao is imminent … a resolution based on buying the land off Fletchers for $50m +/- (using your and my taxpayer monies) and then gifting it back to a ‘Trust’ to do what they want with it … probably nothing.

And then silence because Cabinet is split on the issue and Ardern can’t get sign-off on the agreement she has promoted as a sop to the liberal left and her own Maori caucus.

Good that New Zealand First has sided with National in opposing the deal because it’s wrong. Private freehold land is sacrosanct and the government is at risk of opening up a can of worms by aligning itself with third parties as the driving force for acquiring privately owned land outside the provisions of the Public Works Act.

A fail on two fronts for Labour.

OUR STATS

Just took a look behind the veil to see where our viewers are coming from today (23 July).

New Zealand top of the pops followed by the USA and then in descending order Oz, Sweden, India, Canada, Cambodia and Hong Kong SAR. Nothing from the UK so I guess Lord Nobacon has gone walkabout.

Interesting to see that Newstalk ZB is actively monitoring the site along with the Spinoff and a whole menagerie of blogs from Blogroll Left.

IS WINSTON COMPOS MENTIS?

I understand that Winston’s performance in the House in yesterday’s General Debate even had members of his own caucus shaking their heads in disbelief.

To recap … hot on the heals of his failure to secure $1.8m in damages from the Crown over the leaking of details regarding his superannuation over-payments (and the awarding of just under $320,000 against him in costs) Peters went on a bizarre rant (using parliamentary privilege) where he accused a whole new raft of people as being responsible for the leak … that it came from one Rachel Morton (parliamentary staffer) who passed it ACTs David Seymour who in turn passed it to Jordan Williams (Taxpayers Union) who told John Bishop (father of National MP Chris Bishop) who leaked it to Newsrooms Tim Murphy.

Simple question … why then did he waste his own and taxpayers money (estimated at $1.2m) in suing ex-Ministers Bennett and Tolley, the CEO of MSD and the State Services Commissioner?

Instructive that Peters is refusing to repeat the allegations outside of Parliament where he could be sued.

For myself I think the pressures he’s facing (including the ongoing SFO investigation into ‘his’ Foundation) has got to him and he’s lashing out against all and sundry. Begs the question … is he really compos mentis?

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER MP (THIS TIME A MINISTER)

My Profile

and so it was just a few posts ago that Psycho Milt was being his sanctimonious worst over the Falloon affair.

And now 24 hours later the odious Iain Sleeze-Galloway gone with St Jacinda avowing she knew nothing, suspected nothing, until alerted to the fact by Judith Collins. If you believe that then you’re living in cloud cuckoo land. Barry Soper quite rightly gave the lie to that a few minutes ago when he noted that the Parliamentary Press Gallery was aware that Galloway was a serial bonker of parliamentary staff stretching back to when he first became an MP 12 years ago. If the Parliamentary Press Gallery knew then the Leader’s Office knew … simple as that. End of story.

So you can fairly ask why did Ardern appoint him a Minister and what hold did he have over her … one would hope the MSM would do the digging but I’m not holding my breath.

And if Jacinda was really concerned about his family why didn’t she take action earlier … so many questions, so few answers. There’s more to this story.

PAY UP WINSTON

My Profile

Winston Raymond Peters has been ordered to pay $317,818,37 in costs following his failed attempt to claim damages from all and sundry over the leaking of his superannuation over-payments. The payment will partially offset the reported $1m cost incurred by the Crown (taxpayer) in defending the case.

Peters has already indicated he will appeal the ruling.

Add that to the $157,400 NZ First rorted from the taxpayer to fund their 2005 election campaign and never repaid (after Labour introduced retrospective legislation to legalise the expenditure) and Winston and Winston First owe the taxpayer $469.218.37. That total excludes any interest accruing in respect of the $150,400 debt.

C’mon on … man up and pay up.

CHARGES PENDING?

My Profile

I see that Winston First has announced the closing down of the NZ First Foundation. Now why would you do that if everything was above board and kosher … something repeatedly asserted by WRP when news first broke that the Foundation was under investigation by the SFO for electoral fraud.

And of course the announced retirement from politics of the odious Clayton Mitchell, Party whip and bag-man for the Foundation had zip, zero, nothing to do with this … and if you believe that then I have a bridge to sell you going ‘cheep’.

An alternative view might be this is all about Peters trying to distance himself from a mess of his own making.
