No Minister

Err I do not think so, the accidental arrival at the Ninth Floor of a building affectionately known as The Beehive, has again run from criticism that is hers and hers alone, criticism fully justified that will come to where she cannot hide. Eventually the evidence becomes irrefutable that lurching from disaster to disaster begins to become overwhelming to a level that even the most committed and biased observer begins to crack in their irrational support..There is a list becoming so extensive of political stuffups that in the time of every preceding Prime Minister would occupy the headlines for days even weeks yet the silence for this endangered one remains silence. Clark and Shower heads, Philip Field, Pantergate, election spending, all made entry into the negative column albeit briefly but sufficient to cause voters to begin to question in their minds. With Key it was more peripheral, familiarity with a waitress in full public view,, never confirmed dreams of something from years earlier at Elders in Melbourne, , a clumsy three way hand shake, not so for the teflon coated albeit now getting thinner by the day, Prinzess Jaz.

Oh for sure in these current managed times the Media is almost totally silenced from any questioning after the payment of over a hundred million dollars of taxpayer provided funding to buy control. Control it is said to include a weekly parley between her expanded army of propaganda producers and the political editors of most of the Main Stream Media to ensure a coordinated delivery of “official news” designed to give credence and positive accounting for the growing mismanagement by the team of incompetents, Persons who are delivering daily until one by one they are removed from center stage to wit, Faafoi, Megan Woods, David Clark, Phil Twyford, Kel Davis, was there a Thomas Cobleigh somewhere in there. into what is gaining usage as “witless Protection” to limit the exposure until such time, all the negative has been extinguished.

The Parliament however in spite of the massive protective suppression afforded by Speaker Mallard to Ardern and Co when the opposition begin mining yet another rich vein of ore that is indicative of another deep hole of incompetent activity that has emerged into the sunlight, there are chinks in the curtains maintaining the Black out.

Question time and the Wednesday Debate are two occasions where the blowtorch can be applied however briefly before Mallard using his awesome power reaches for a fire extinguisher even to ejecting a troublesome perpetrator as a final resort. Those tragics who have intermittently endured the pit of often childish behaviours , in my case since the days when following the death of Big Norm Kirk and the subsequent ultimately doomed leadership of Rowling after a brief caretakership from Hugh Watt, when Muldoon at his best, began a systematic dismantling of the Labour Parliamentary party

That was when Gerry Wall became widely accepted as the worst speaker ever until a very clever ex teenage prodigy from radio quizzing, who later inherited the title of ‘minister of Wine and Cheese’ used the Office of Speaker to assist his party in ways that largely escaped the aura of bias. No where near as clever but supposedly academically qualified, came The Clark shield of sanctimony, a screeching harridan , one Margaret Wilson, who regularly resorted to screaming in her attempts to manage the adversarial activities. Now the resident thug of the House has the job and he has zero scruples around impartiality and a once accepted disassociation from daily party involvement, he remains right at the center of NZLP parliamentary management and involvement. By and large National speakers have managed a decorum either through competence or ineptitude to give at least lip service to the role of speaker. playing fair, something well beyond the belief systems of labour, apparently..

Suspending might be the operative word in this latest running away from scrutiny but it might be said, cancelling is a more accurate and appropriate descriptive for what has been employed. Collins and Seymore should have been all over this for what it is, unfettered power, even Muldoon would have shied away from such extraordinary manipulation of Parliamentary process.

Roosevelt in an early address to the Congress as alluded to elsewhere famously stated “There is nothing to fear but fear itself” and that Madam Prime Minister is exactly what has driven you to yet another trampling of the fragile process that sustains our Westminster based system once described by Churchill, yes that very outstanding parliamentary prodigy you acquiesced to removal of his portrait from the parliament who suggested on Democracy after his rejection by the people he had delivered from the scourge of Nazism:

“Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time”.

I accept that in your addled Socialist mind you may have difficulty understanding the nuances involved in that statement but maybe get someone more intellectually competent to explain it to yourself, New Zealand will certainly benefit.

  1. Meh. I couldn’t care less. Parliament has been a joke for years now in terms of “holding the government accountable”.

The only thing that truly holds a government accountable are elections where they fear being turfed out by the voters.

And judging by this comment here by Maggy about what she heard in RNZ and TV interviews, the people of NZ want this, and will want it again in 2023:

RNZ interviewed folks up & down the Country this morning, – only 1 chap from New Plymouth voiced disapprovl of the continuing lockdown.

The same with interviews of public on TV One last night – all seemed happy to be locked down…some seemed very happy that they don’t have to be at work.

I take some of my lefty mates as bell-weather guides as to how the general public are thinking…currently they have come around to accepting that we may have to live with the virus…sometime in the distant future… but when everyone is vaxxed (and booster-vaxxed), life will go back to normal.
They are not exhibiting any concerns about how our Dear PM is managing things.

BTW, that’s the reason for National’s uselessness; they’ve always been excellent at sniffing the wind and the wind tells them not to fight on this issue. Hence all the stuff about a “better managed” MIQ, vaccine roll-out, etc. Hell, they’d probably even argue they’d could manage the lockdowns better.

But don’t worry tribal National fans, when you get into power in 2023 (more likely 2026) none of this will matter and little remembered and you’ll be able to get on with managing the new He Puapua institutions set up by Labour.

To be fair I’m sure you will manage them better.

  2. What difference does it make – it is not as if the National Opposition is going to hold the Government’s feet to the fire

    • The old adage that “something beats nothing” is still true.

The trouble is that I’ve seen National in Opposition and it is “nothing”, which is why it’s being beaten up the “something” of the Labour government.

So the truism remains a truth. 🙂

    • Tom is National actually being beaten up by the Labour members or is it just Mallard and the compliant media that is holding them back.

I actually think that given a `fair suck of the sav’ as the saying goes the National front bench man for man is a better governing bet than anything on offer from Labour. The public is just not allowed to see that and possibly will not for the forseeable future.

    • Based on other people’s observations, I think National are being screwed by a combination of a monolithic MSM and Speaker Mallard, although to be fair the latter seems the same as the routines run by Hunt and Wilson, albeit more “in-your-face”, given that it’s Mallard.

Since there is no proposed change in the structures around Parliamentary questions we’re back to hoping a Lockwood Smith will turn up in future – although that will be matched by future Mallard’s and Wilsons.

And that’s really the National problem in a nutshell: when next elected into government they’ll just leave all the structures and institutions in place (TVNZ, RNZ, NZ On Air) so even though I agree they’ll be better managers that’s not really the problem.

As you say, this is a perfectly “foreseeable future”, one which National and her tribal supporters are apparently content to live with forever.
